Considering the groups that backed her, this may have been part of the plan from the start. If McCain looks good then she can try to secure a position to influence his administration. If it looks bad, then she splits off and secures her own reputation as a strong right wing candidate while leaving the bad rep for McCain. Jay

McCain may have picked her, but she was being pushed hard by the far christian right that is uncomfortable with McCain's politics. It's those hard right types that are probably telling Palin to separate herself from McCain now, that she can run again in 4 years if she gets enough space from McCain. Jay
