Heard something yesterday.
As I tried to get Snots running on Solaris.
Of course, they don't make CLIENTS for UNIX anymore.
The first version of notes, including the interface, were designed by a guy who didn't believe in the CompSci stuff. Twas a businessman, twas he.
And did we mention dyslexic? Which is why / = \\ until recently. And some other UI insights.
I don't have any clue where Notes is supposed to be going. The 5 client is uasable, crappy, but usable.
Applications looking the same I don't think is a huge problem, though....
One of our app guys was telling me his first Snots install was at an engineering place, where they were building a plane. 500 M CAD file. That they emailed back and forth. 100 engineers. (And would copy everybody else on changes)
They apparently had terabytes of disk space before he was done....
(at least Groupwise only makes ONE copy of a mail to everybody).

Notes Unix clients.
A few months back, I began agitating on Lotus] web forum about a Linux client. Several other people began to pitch in until someone posted that he'd actually asked in person at a Lotus event about the possibility of a Linux client: and Lotus weren't interested in porting v5 to Linux or anything else, mostly because it was enough of a headache to port the server... Re: Notes Unix clients.
This is one of the reasons that I don't really care about Notes.
They're *all* idiots there. Must have been part of the IBM-Lotus buyout that they couldn't fire the idiots.
And they're all idiots. The interface is pathetic, the servers are sluggish, the marketing could take lessons from Commodore-Amiga and do better....
And they seem geniunly *surprised* that the Linux community isn't flocking to them, since they've ported the server to Linux. (nevermind that most of that community runs Linux on the *desktop* as well, and golly, Note's Ain't That Useful without a client.
Meanwhile, you've got to run Windows to use the client, which sucks on any OS....
Notes admins tell me the reason they use NT for servers is that "Its almost impossible to administer a server without a client running on it, and Windows has the only client".
Bah. They need LARTing, severely.

Curious thing about Notes.
Although Lotus sell and support it, there's another company who actually write it. They're called Iris. And it seems to be the Iris team who dont't want to port it. Unfortunately, from what I can work out, Lotus can't port it without Iris' help because Iris own the code!
But I'm not sure about all that...

I asked in person at a Linux conference
I was told that they had reports of people successfully running the Windows client with Wine, and they thought that was enough.
Oh well. Killing Lotus Notes is on our ToDo list anyways...

Bastiches... Lousy farging iceholes...
If it runs under wine, how big a step is it to compiling it using the winelibs?
Sheesh. They're not even GPLed - they 'lose' no IP rights.

Killing notes?
I presume, at your company, that is.
Drat.
They are perhaps the most perfect example of a group that Does Not Get It [anything]. "Here. Here's our product. Use it. Shaddup. Use it. No, we don't CARE what you like. Use it."
"Whaddya mean people aren't using it?"

Naw.
HMOs care about profit. The way Notes is being run, it's like they want to lose customers.
