New Question for those "Down Under"
My daughter wants to do a semester in Australia next year. She will be a college junior (3d year). Her major is communications with a minor in art. (That's a small a not a capital A ;-) ). She needs a recommendation for a school. Her roommate is going this year and told her to go by major/minor. For her roommate the selection ended up with two schools. For my daughter with communication/art she has a large choice of schools. And no, I don't have a clue as to what schools they are.

Her primary question, other that school, is "what part of Australia should I visit?"

So, pitch your area, and help her decide.

Thanks,

Grateful Dad... :-)

All replies are helpful. If it is a school recommendation or a place "not to miss". I'll forward all replies to her. Let me know it if would be ok for her to contact you directly if she has any specific questions.
Joe

New I thought you were going to ask about unis...
... 'cause I couldn't answer that one!

There is lots of Australia to see. What is she looking for? Sydney has a lot of city-ish things, including the bridge and the opera house, but there is also our famous beaches (e.g. Manly, Bondi, Cronulla, ...) and there are lots of bush things possible, too, including the Blue Mountains, the Royal National Park, and lots more besides.

I know Sydney best, but for other city-ish places, she could visit practically any of the major areas: Melbourne, Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Adelaide, Perth, Cairns,... they all have their unique charms. Cairns is a bit of a gateway to the Great Barrier Reef. Adelaide has wine country in it's backyard (there are other wine areas, though), Brisbane and the Gold Coast has casinos and theme parks. Melbourne is a little harder to define though its character is quite different to Sydney.

Some of the other Big Things to see are in rural areas or the outback. I haven't been to Uluru, but that's a popular destination, as are other natural features in the area. People like the wilderness of Kakadu in the tropical north, too. I've already mentioned the Barrier Reef and a multitide of wine areas. There are snow and ski fields, and numerous scenic and/or historic railways. Or she may prefer Canberra, which is where our Federal government is, but also has the National Film and Sound Archive, the National Art Gallery, the War Memorial and other things of that ilk.

Any of that useful?

Wade.

Is it enough to breathe
Somebody rip my heart out
And leave me here to bleed

Is it enough to die
Somebody save my life
I'd rather be Anything but Ordinary

New Actual it is a two part question/request
She will be spending 4-6 months there. So, which school is also a huge part. Which school / location would be the best to attend / visit.

New According to my old prof...
At least in the late '60s, the big 2 universities in Australia were Sydney University and the University of New South Wales. He went to both, so was biased. ;-)

That was for EE, so the choices are likely different for art and comms.

HTH a tiny bit!

Cheers,
Scott.

New I want to see it all!
I have a passport and now that I have a job, I can't wait to see da woild! (They just talked to me about compensation and let's just say that I'm going to be doing VERRRRRRRRRY well :-D)

If I were her, I'd probably want to check out Canberra, since that's where all your National Art Treasures are located.

Get me a list of your attorney/solicitor/lawyer/court reporter friends. I'm taking my company international!!!

New Sorry for the late reply
Wade's reply has it pretty much covered.

I'd definitely recommend being based in Sydney - it's the biggest city, so, has the must 'stuff' to see and do. And it's not difficult to get to Canberra, which has the national art gallery and so forth. I don't think flights are too expensive, or a 3.5hr bus trip is around $30 for a concession fare.

As for wher else to visit - wel there's Uluru of course, but that is aloong way away, and I believe a pretty expensive exercise to get out there and back again. Byron Bay's nice, but you may not like your daughter mixing with the backpacker crowd.

'Fraid I've been out of school too log to recommend any good ones! But if she has found some schools in her research, fire their names my way and I can at least tell you if/what I've heard of them.

If you'd like to email me directly, no dramas, just add the letter i, w, and t to my username here, then the at symbol, then mac, then the dot and the com. I always feel silly writing out these obfuscated email rules, I guess it's a necessary evil though...

Two out of three people wonder where the other one is.
