Need to read ,MET files
From the realm of "it figures".
Where I work spent Millions (billions) on Y2K. In someone's infinite wisdom, the documentation was saved in .MET format (Omnipage - OCR). Of course we no longer have any valid copies of the software, and it is no longer on the authorized software list.
So...
Does anyone know what I can use to view these documents? And possible save them in a standard format?
Yeah, some of the application are that old... Old COBOL programs never die. The documentation just disappears... :-)
TIA Joe

You may be stuck.
None of the graphics file viewers I've used (PMView, xnView, IrfanView) support OmniPage .MET files. It looks like you'll have to find someone to approve the $500 OmniPage purchase.
Make sure the [link|http://www.nuance.com/omnipage/professional/|latest version] can read the files first, though.
HTH a bit. Good luck.
Cheers, Scott.

Poor guy is majorly sleep deprived. I don't know how he does it.

If you can send me a single page or a small one.
I'll see what I can finger out.
There is slighted that the .MET format isn't as unique/proprietary as it is thought to be.

I'll see if I can find a small file
But I did contact Nuance (OmniPage) and got a 15 day download. I should be able to convert the most important docs in that time.
How big is small?

I have zero limits...
Was mainly for you, so you didna have to give away the farm.
I'd say 100MB would be too big. Anything under 1MB would be good, stuff larger fine...
I have 1TB of available capacity through my machine before I get charged more..

Replied back... obviously.
Its not the "current" format, but 1 or 2 revisions old.
CPAN has some modules that can read the current format... tough luck chuck.
Looks like Nuance (and Omnipage) is the only solution for you.
I even had my... "find anything out there if it exists" guy look. All he found was stuff for the more open version.

Thanks for the assistance
Now we'll see if I can convince the powers to purchase a full copy. More likely will be to use the free trial, spend as many hours as possible to convert docs. When trial expires, get another for a different member of the team. :-(

As opposed to free?
Or really, that $500 is WAY more than $500 when you take into account the purchasing process of a large company or gov agency.

What? We should raise the postage again?
It's no longer on the authorized buy list. And it is not a requirement. Instead, we'll just have the developers document everything again. After all, everyone knows that software developers always have extra time... [image|/forums/images/warning.png|0|This is sarcasm...]
