They shut down 25
part of a "security initiative".
email clients need to be reset to continue to send and receive mail. There are details at the comcast.net site...which is blocked to me at the moment. Think new port is 589 or something like that.
POST EDIT
Its 587

Actually it's MSA.
== Mail Submission Agent.
Almost identical to an MTA (and even speaks the same protocol), but the MSA can fix things like missing headers. They can also have different policies for access control and spam-handling, and so on. MSAs tend to have SMTP AUTH enabled, too, which is viable given their role.

You need to guess?
Because they only know their script and their script is for Outlook. And everyone runs Windows and Outlook, don't they? :-P

Actually,
they have instructions for over a half dozen email clients on their website.
The people on the phones need them. Badly.
The last couple of techs have been pretty good though. Much improved over the installers and the limited times I've spent with phone tech support.

Jenny(Wed Oct 03 2007 13:46:21 GMT-0400 (EDT))>
Hello {{crazy}}_, Thank you for contacting Comcast Live Chat Support. My name is Jenny. Please give me one moment to review your information.
Jenny(Wed Oct 03 2007 13:46:45 GMT-0400 (EDT))>
{{crazy}}, I can help you with your Internet and email issues.
{{crazy}}_(Wed Oct 03 2007 13:45:08 GMT-0400 (EDT))>
ok, am I waiting for you?
Jenny(Wed Oct 03 2007 13:48:05 GMT-0400 (EDT))>
How do you send and receive email, {{crazy}}?
Jenny(Wed Oct 03 2007 13:48:10 GMT-0400 (EDT))>
Are you using Outlook Express?
{{crazy}}_(Wed Oct 03 2007 13:47:25 GMT-0400 (EDT))>
I use kmail under Linux. To test connectivity, I simply "telnet smtp.comcast.net 25". This should give me a telnet session to your smtp server. It hangs. When I use the same telnet command from the outside of your network, it responds correctly, presenting me with the email server prompt.
Jenny(Wed Oct 03 2007 13:50:26 GMT-0400 (EDT))>
When sending and receiving email, are you connected to Comcast at the time? Or, are you connected to another Internet Service Provider (ISP)?
Jenny(Wed Oct 03 2007 13:50:38 GMT-0400 (EDT))>
Sorry, please ignore that question.
Jenny(Wed Oct 03 2007 13:50:42 GMT-0400 (EDT))>
It was sent in error.
{{crazy}}_(Wed Oct 03 2007 13:48:46 GMT-0400 (EDT))>
ok
Jenny(Wed Oct 03 2007 13:51:02 GMT-0400 (EDT))>
We do not support telnet.
{{crazy}}_(Wed Oct 03 2007 13:49:18 GMT-0400 (EDT))>
I'm not asking you to, that is the simplest way to test the conneciton.
Jenny(Wed Oct 03 2007 13:52:07 GMT-0400 (EDT))>
Do you have our Comcast Home Networking service?
{{crazy}}_(Wed Oct 03 2007 13:50:48 GMT-0400 (EDT))>
Not sure - I have comcast cable modem and TV, what is the "Comcast Home Networking service"?
Jenny(Wed Oct 03 2007 13:53:15 GMT-0400 (EDT))>
It is Internet service.
{{crazy}}_(Wed Oct 03 2007 13:51:29 GMT-0400 (EDT))>
Well, then, yes, I get my internet service from you.
Jenny(Wed Oct 03 2007 13:54:29 GMT-0400 (EDT))>
For setting up KMail for E-mail, please visit: [link|http://www.comcast.net/help/faq/index.jsp?faq=EmailKMail18076|http://www.comcast.n...q=EmailKMail18076]
Jenny(Wed Oct 03 2007 13:54:41 GMT-0400 (EDT))>
Is there anything else I can help you with today, {{crazy}}?
{{crazy}}_(Wed Oct 03 2007 13:53:08 GMT-0400 (EDT))>
It is setup correctly. I am sure. It has been working fine for years. A simple connectivity test to your smtp server fails.
Jenny(Wed Oct 03 2007 13:55:52 GMT-0400 (EDT))>
Sorry, {{crazy}}. However, you are using a mail program that we do not support.
{{crazy}}_(Wed Oct 03 2007 13:54:15 GMT-0400 (EDT))>
Sigh.
{{crazy}}_(Wed Oct 03 2007 13:54:25 GMT-0400 (EDT))>
FIOS is looking mighty nice today.
Jenny(Wed Oct 03 2007 13:56:31 GMT-0400 (EDT))>
Please click on the link, [link|http://www.comcast.net|http://www.comcast.net] which will open a new window. Then click on the Mail icon and sign in using your user name and password.
Jenny(Wed Oct 03 2007 13:56:52 GMT-0400 (EDT))>
Once logged in, try sending an email and let me know if you can send it or not, please.
{{crazy}}_(Wed Oct 03 2007 13:55:16 GMT-0400 (EDT))>
Sure, give me a sec.
Jenny(Wed Oct 03 2007 13:57:32 GMT-0400 (EDT))>
Ok.
{{crazy}}_(Wed Oct 03 2007 13:56:16 GMT-0400 (EDT))>
I assume you are making sure I've got my login, password, etc, correct. But: I can recieve email just fine. It only fails on sending. And you son't care about login credentials for sending unless it is a recent change.
Jenny(Wed Oct 03 2007 13:59:11 GMT-0400 (EDT))>
Once logged in {{crazy}}, please send an email and let me know if you can send it or not, please.
Jenny(Wed Oct 03 2007 14:00:39 GMT-0400 (EDT))>
Were you able to send an email?
{{crazy}}_(Wed Oct 03 2007 13:58:58 GMT-0400 (EDT))>
Gimme another minute, your website changed and is asking for me to use a different browser, I'm getting there....
Jenny(Wed Oct 03 2007 14:01:16 GMT-0400 (EDT))>
Ok.
Jenny(Wed Oct 03 2007 14:02:44 GMT-0400 (EDT))>
Were you able to send an email?
{{crazy}}_(Wed Oct 03 2007 14:01:17 GMT-0400 (EDT))>
YEs.
Jenny(Wed Oct 03 2007 14:03:31 GMT-0400 (EDT))>
Great!
{{crazy}}_(Wed Oct 03 2007 14:01:32 GMT-0400 (EDT))>
I sent it to myself, and my local kmail picked it up just fine.
Jenny(Wed Oct 03 2007 14:04:23 GMT-0400 (EDT))>
For now, {{crazy}}, send email via the Comcast Webmail.
Jenny(Wed Oct 03 2007 14:04:54 GMT-0400 (EDT))>
To get help with kmail, you will need to seek help from its manufacturer.
Jenny(Wed Oct 03 2007 14:05:12 GMT-0400 (EDT))>
When sending email via kmail, are you connected to Comcast at the time?
{{crazy}}_(Wed Oct 03 2007 14:03:20 GMT-0400 (EDT))>
This is obvious a tiered support issue.
{{crazy}}_(Wed Oct 03 2007 14:03:58 GMT-0400 (EDT))>
I will attempt to contact later on when I either have time to scream or cancel my contract, since you obviously have no idea what I am talking about when I say I can't connect.

I called direct to their security group
I consider web chat support the same as phone...they're hopeless.
You need to change the smtp port to 587. That fixes the problem. Requires user/pass authentication, iirc.f

Two out of three people wonder where the other one is.

And on further review, I was wrong
They DID update the on-line help file and the setup shows it.
But because it was working forever, I was foolish enough to believe they wouldn't change the world and there was simply a new port 25 block. So even when she pointed it out, I ignored it.
Damn.
Think I should track down Jenny (bot or not) and apologise?
