"The Food Hole" - on the eve
Opens for business tomorrow AM. A local has posted [link|http://www.flickr.com/photos/in2jazz/sets/991261/|some photos of the last thirty months work.] I might post some of my own after a while, but probably not before mid-October, as I am heading out of town in a few days.

"The Food Hole" - first impressions
Enormous store. Parking in the neighborhood has abruptly gone from intolerable to impossible. The traffic is...apocalyptic.
I took a [link|http://homepage.mac.com/rcareaga/PhotoAlbum9.html|couple of dozen pictures] this afternoon until I was politely busted (no photos without written permission of the regional manager and the Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security for Culinary Affairs).
cordially,
Die Welt ist alles, was der Fall ist.

We had a store like that open here
"Papa Joe's Grocery And Conference Center". Two stories tall, with automatic wine tasting machines, 5 deli counters, and so on, and so forth, and etcetera.
The floor design unfortunately placed the deli counters directly inside the front entrance, creating a line and crowd that effectively made actual produce shopping impossible there for the first two weeks. Traffic is still abyssmal, but one can actually get in the door now.
The Whole Paycheck store is moving to larger digs in a swanky outside mall in response. We also have a few of these things called "Nino Salvaggio's" that look to be about as large as your Food Hole store.

It's so beautiful.
Someday. Someday.
At least we have one wayyyyy on the other side of town. It's a hike, but it's there when I need it.

Thanks.
I've been to the WFM in Austin, TX but haven't shopped at one around here. I've been getting a few things at our local [link|http://www.balduccis.com/|Balducci's] - they have very good pre-made salads (though they're spendy). It's nice to be able to pop in after work, park, grab a few things, and be out in less than 5 minutes rather than waiting in line at a supermarket.
Enjoy!
Cheers, Scott.

Yeah, looks about normal.
When the one in Glendale moved to its new location the parking lot swarmed with security goons for the first couple of weekends and there were few parking spaces to be found in their huge lot.
Within a month or so it calmed down and there's always parking there even on Saturdays. I don't shop there but sometimes I go to see if they have some specialty item - mostly not - they're really not all that adventurous except in the cheese section.

Some specialty items
We've found things like chana dal and so on, but I wouldn't consider those particularly adventuresome either. I'd agree on the cheese section; that's very nice. Mmmm. Red Leicester.

Around here I buy olives in plastic barrels . . .
. . for between US $8 and $10 per barrel. Damned good olives too, green, black, plain or with lemon or chili - packed for folks from olive growing countries. Drained weight about 5 pounds per barrel.

Ooooh!
Not only for the olives, but I'm a sucker for a cool reusable plastic container!
