Breakfast of Champions - Kurt Vonnegut Jr. and perhaps it's sequel - Deadeye Dick That said, Vonnegut borrows from Twain, but is describing contemporary society to a tee. I've read interviews with Thompson where he acknowledges that he borrows heavily from Kurt... Either way, Breakfast is a classic. Slaughterhouse Five is a must read as well...
