A/C ist Kaput!
2:00 AM - Awoke to grinding sounds in the attic as the central air tried to kick on. First thought I was imagining it. "Oh, it's just couple of trash cans fighting on the roof."
As the unit tried to switch on several more times, it sounded like Gimli was upstairs sharpening his double axe on a very rough grindstone.
Then there was the "thunk".
"Thunk" is not a good sign.
Immediately turned off the a/c at the thermostat and told my son there was a problem. He went and turned on the a/c at thermostat. Then he heard the clunking sound.
"Oh".
The repairman won't be here till tomorrow :(

Good news/bad news
The repair guy was able to squeeze us in today! Problem was minor...burnt wires caused a short. Ahhhh! Cool air!
Bad news, though. While seeking refuge in the game room, our 5 year old heat pump unit was strangely warm. After fiddling with it, I determined that the problem was beyond my expertise, so I asked the a/c man to look at it. He pulled the outside unit apart to reveal - a dead compressor.
Forget the stun gun, honey.

Sorry to hear that, Amy!
It definitely is bad news. The question of replacing the entire unit vs. just the compressor may come up. I've done each at least once. And, it's a chunk of change either way.
When the last time you had a check-up on it?

I hate to say this, but...
we will probably have to toss the whole shebang. The unit was installed 5 yrs ago when we converted our garage into a game room. The most annoying thing was that it was run by remote control. If you lost it, you were screwed. Also, the temp was in Celsius. (How whacked out is that? <grin>)
The a/c guy said it was the lowest end of a not so good brand. I am smacking myself for not doing my homework at the time of the addition. I just let the contractor handle it. It had a 5 year warranty and it expired in May.
Oh well, there's a cold front coming in Thursday :)
