This despite the current usage being more appropriate. The term "hacker" may have come from makers of crude furniture and in computers originally referred to unplanned and crudely executed code - a "hack". Now the coding community is trying to enforce it as a designation of skill and respect. It's an exercise in futility, but then what can you expect from members of a community that accepts "nerd" and "geek" as perfectly acceptable designations for themselves.
