Welcome to IWETHEY!

New I'll use Pidgin...as soon as I can map into previous instr.
OK, for those of us who are complete nimrods...

Downloaded Pidgin, and tried to set it up. Pidgin (for Windows) has a cute little tabbed window where you set up all manner of things for the account. On the Basic tab I have the opportunity to select:

--> Protocol
--> Screen name
--> Password
--> Local Alias
--> Remember Password
--> New mail Notifications
--> Use this Buddy Icon.

OK...What Protocol do you guys use?

Is the Screen name Pidgin-speak for the username that Peter referred to/ If so, should I enter jb4@iwethey.org? or just jb4?

I assume that the password is the password for IWETHEY itself...

WTF is a "Local Alias"?

On to the Advanced tab...I have the following options there:
--> Server
--> Port (defaults to 5190)
--> Proxy type
--> One or more options that are based on the protocol chosen inthe Basic tab

So the Server is easy (iwethey.org)

I'm leaving the port alone...you guys wouldn't use some undocumented, non-standard port for IMing...now would you?

I'm using the Global Proxy settings (as this is my work machine)

so here I am, gonna give it a try. Go to Pidgin's main screen (which is indecipherably labeled "Buddy List"), and go to "Buddies", where I'd be able to select the ZIWT chat room (there is nowhere else to select it...). But wait...that option is greyed out. Then, asynchronously, at the bottom of the screen, I get the following nastygram:

jb4@iwethey.org disconnected

Could not connect to authentication server:
Windows socket error #10060

Which to me is about as helpful as a toothache.

So what have I set up wrong?

thanx in advance...

Jabber

Is the Screen name Pidgin-speak for the username that Peter referred to/ If so, should I enter jb4@iwethey.org? or just jb4?

It's the screen name on Jabber. It would be "jb4" for you, if you want.

I assume that the password is the password for IWETHEY itself...

No, it's your Jabber password for your "jb4" account. You don't have one? Well, you enter what you want it to be and then "Register" that account. Check "Remember password" so you won't have to worry about it again.

WTF is a "Local Alias"?

When you're on, it will substitute a string of your choice for your screen name, I think. In my case "Another Scott" is my local alias.

Advanced Tab .... So the Server is easy (iwethey.org)

[edit:]
Nope. conference.iwethey.org Don't ask me to explain why it's done that way...

You were correct. The Server on the Advanced Tab is iwethey.org.[/edit]

With those settings you're almost done. Hit the "Register" button and the "Save" button (or vice versa).

Next, go to the "Buddies" menu. Select "Add Chat" to add a "chat room" to your account. Chat rooms are where the discussion takes place.

The "Room" is ziwt, enter your Jabber password and the other fields as above.

[edit:] Use "conference.iwethey.org" as the "Server" in this tab.[/edit]

You'll see yourself as a buddy with a lightbulb icon. Double-click it and you'll be in the room and see the log of the previous discussion.

One of the options is to enable local logging. You might want to do that. Also, it's common for the Jabber connection to the client to drop every day or so, so you may need to reconnect to get going.

HTH. Good luck!

Sorry for the misdirection jb!

Cheers,
Scott.

Jabber

Only one problem, Another Scott...Jabber is not one of the options. My choices include:

AIM
Gadu-Gadu
Google Talk
Groupwise
ICQ
IRC
MSN
QQ
SILC
SIMPLE
Sametime
XMPP
Yahoo

No Jabber. How do I add Jabber to the list?

I assume that the password is the password for IWETHEY itself...

No, it's your Jabber password for your "jb4" account. You don't have one? Well, you enter what you want it to be and then "Register" that account. Check "Remember password" so you won't have to worry about it again.

Well, until I can get the right protocol, I don't believe this will work.

With those settings you're almost done. Hit the "Register" button and the "Save" button (or vice versa).

What "register" button? I've got no such thing on the accounts dialog, or the buddy list, or available through the window.

Have I got the right Pidgin? It's Help dialog shows it as 2.1.0, URL: http//pidgin.im The first paragraph of the about box is:
Pidgin is a graphical modular messaging client based on libpurple which is capable of connecting to AIM, MSN, Yahoo!, XMPP, ICQ, IRC, SILC, SIP/SIMPLE, Novell GroupWise, Lotus Sametime, Bonjour, Zephyr, Gadu-Gadu, and QQ all at once. It is written using GTK+.

Note: Jabber is not listed.

thanx in advance for further clarification...

New Adventures in Pidgin
So, thanks to Steve Lowe, I now can specify the correct protocol...which of course causes the Modify Account dialog to change completely. I still have my screen name (jb4), but now it wants a Domain and a Resource (which it so helpfully sets to "Home").

Let's see...Domain is probably iwethey.org...I have no idea what the Resource might be, so I'll just leave it at the default.

On the newly revamped Advanced tab, it wants a connect port of 5222...that's probably ok...and a Connect Server. Hmmmm...is that conference.iwethey.org or just iwethey.org? Let's try the former.

HEY!! There's a Register button, just like Another Scott said! Cool...Let's press it.

Uhhh, bad news! Nastygram says:
jb4@iwethey.org/Home (jb4) (XMPP) disconnected

Could not establish a connection with the server:
Error resolving conference.iwethey.org: 11004

Pidgin will not attempt to reconnect the account until you correct the error and re-enable the account

Well, at least they're trying to be helpful. OK so it's bitching about conference.iwethey.org. Mebbe the trick is to change the Connect Server to just iwethey.com (as that's the only place that conference.iwethey.org was entered.

Make the change and click Register...

Hey! That sorta worked... after clearing the "Register this Account" dialog by clincking its Register button, it tells me that "Registration of jb4@iwethey.org successful"

K3wl! Now, how to start? Go to the Buddies menu entry...It seems I would want to join a chat. OK...more dialogs to fill out:

Account: already filled out; syas: jb4@iwethey.org/Home (jb4) (XMPP). That sounds about right (or, at least it is consistent with the stuff inthe Account dialog)

Room: IIRC, it is ziwt

Server: already filled out, it is conference.iwethey.com. Hey! That's what i was told to expect! Things are looking up!

Handle: already filled out, it says jb4. I can live with that...

Password: I thought it was supposed to remember my password from the accounts dialog...OK I'll re-enter it here,and try to figure out why it didn't remember later.

Click Join and...a teeny tiny box shows up...with a conversation in progress! With people whose handles I recognize!

NOw, since I have my window backgrounds set tot a dark grey, some of the colors the client has chosen for me ar a bit difficult. I can't seem to find a way to override them (Bad Pidgin...no french fry!). But it seems that I'm on Now to post something...

That seems to work! and Found a couple of people there, too.

Thanx one and all for the help.

New Check above, jb (and Ashton).
I'm sorry I gave incorrect information for some fields. I think my edited post above has the correct information now.

Once you are able to connect, Add a Chat and fill out the fields as when you registered with the Jabber server. The "Room" is ziwt. The "Server" is conference.iwethey.org. The "Handle" is the username you used when you Registered the Jabber account. The "Password" is your Jabber password. The "Alias" is whatever you want to call yourself in more human-readable form. The "Group" is "Buddies" for me. Presumably you can rearrange your various Jabber accounts if you IM constantly.

HTH! Good luck, and sorry for the mistakes earlier.

Cheers,
Scott.
(Who misses Unix "talk"...)
New No Problem
I'm there, and that's all that matters. Without your help, I'd have never gotten there. From my vantage point, no apologies are necessary. Happy IM-ing!
