According to reports, in addition to the fighter jets, Teheran also plans to purchase a number of aerial fuel tankers that are compatible with the Sukhoi and capable of extending its range by thousands of kilometers. Defense officials said the Sukhoi sale would grant Iran long-range offensive capabilities. It isn't clear exactly which version of the SU-30 they are selling. And the Russians (and US for that matter) often sell subtly inferior versions to their customers when dealing with advanced gear. Still, the SU-30 is a current plane and should greatly increase Iran's air power. Jay

The Pentagon is paying a contractor at least $900,000 to destroy old F-14s, a jet affectionately nicknamed "the turkey," rather than sell the spares at the risk of their falling into the wrong hands, including Iran's.
