New What Matthew said.
Remember that the US doesn't have a government funded TV network. The Brits do. This is how it's paid for.

Interestingly, Australia tried the TV License idea when TV first came about, too, and for the same reason: to pay for the national broadcaster. I don't recall why it didn't survive, but I think the size of our country might have had something to do with it.

Wade.

Is it enough to breathe
Somebody rip my heart out
And leave me here to bleed

Is it enough to die
Somebody save my life
I'd rather be Anything but Ordinary
Please

New we have 2, one is called PBS, public broadcasting system
but in a typical american fashion we dont give them much beyond office space and signal, the rest is by subscription and donations. The other is called VOA and is aimed at governments that we dont like funded by state department.
thanx,
bill

New That's not really the same.
I've heard stories about PBS' funding drives. Australia's [link|http://www.abc.net.au/|ABC] does not run on donations or subscriptions. Most, if not all, of it's income is in the Federal budget. The BBC is funded similarly.

VOA is in a separate class. The BBC has a "World Service" and even our ABC has "Radio Australia" which does the same sort of thing.
