New Who'd have thunk that I would endorse Prince?

And, unsurprisingly, the comments of the industry folks and the others at the end show a remarkable level of cluelessness about what is killing the music industry...and its NOT downloading.

New he has been putting out good stuff for years
and has been willing to poke record labels in the eye.
thanx,

New He's a brilliant artist.
And that puts him in a small category. He is greatly admired for his musical abilities and I respect him for that. It's just his music does nothing for me. (I find much the same thing with U2: I respect the band, their history and ability, and so on, but their music does nothing for me.)

It doesn't surprise me that he's finding ways around the record companies. What he should be doing is helping other people do the same.

Wade.

Is it enough to love
Is it enough to breathe
Somebody rip my heart out
And leave me here to bleed

Is it enough to die
Somebody save my life
I'd rather be Anything but Ordinary
Please

New That he is
and some of his music does actually appeal to me...some does not.

Not sure I would put U2 in the same category...instead attributing much of their success to hiring Brian Eno to produce them..upped their musical quotient greatly.

Bowie, Rundgren, Thomas Dolby have all ventured into self production...will be interesting to see how the next couple of years shake out. This is really the first time that someone has mass marketed the defection.

New Duh
It devalues the music and the losers will be new artists who are trying to come through ... Consumers only have so much listening time in the week and if they receive the new album from Prince then they don't need to buy new music and will spend their money on something else.
They only have so much listening time, or they only have so much money? I think it's more reasonable to predict that they'll spend their money on those new aretists who are trying to come through.
