Welcome to IWETHEY!

New So, now that things are looking better...
I am asked to have a better Notebook/laptop PC than my 800MHz machine. Since I haven't even looked for a Notebook since... never... I am not as up to speed as I probably should be.

Please don't point me to Apple or Dell at this point, as I have fully grok'd the informations well.

I am asking for other Brands/Models upon which to look.

Requirements for me are:

1. Recent design with hopefully Linux friendly hardware
2. Large display(15.4" or 17" better) WXGA+ or better
3. Integrated Wired 10/100/1000 Enet
4. Integrated Wifi (a/b/g/whatever)
5. 2 pcmcia slots, one for wireless broadband (cellular)
6. Lotsa Memory capacity (4GB would be good)
7. ????
8. Profit!

Now, I've looked at the DV9429US by HP Nice rig, but I don't know yet.

Also looking at buying a new Desktop machine for the Home Office. I'll prolly build that.

New My 1.7 GHz Pentium M Thinkpad T41 has treated me well.
It's maxed out at 2 GB, but otherwise meets all your specs, I think. [link|http://cgi.ebay.com/IBM-ThinkPad-T41-1-7GHz-512MB-60Gb-DVD-CD-RW-XP-WiFi_W0QQitemZ290139733918QQihZ019QQcategoryZ140083QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem|Similar boxes] seem to go for $300 - $500 or so on eBay. I haven't looked at Lenovo Thinkpads as my next laptop will probably be a Mac.

There are some relatively cheap AMD dual core laptops out there (e.g. newegg), but I don't know what compromises they took to get the price down.

If you want something really cheap, you might look at [link|http://stores.ebay.com/Recycle4va_Laptops_W0QQcolZ4QQdirZ1QQfsubZ5QQftidZ2QQtZkm|Recycle4VA].

The next machine I get my Mom will probably be a cheap laptop. She seems to have issues with various peripherals having driver issues (I'm sure it's user error, but still...) - I'm hoping having an all-in-one box will lessen those issues.

Remember that if you want a new Lenovo/IBM box that there are stock-holder discounts... :-)

HTH a bit.

Cheers,
Scott.
New depends
fer instance...for 500 you can get a t40, not the latest and greatest..but a 1.6 processor and a gig of mem...built in 802.11 and ethernet...cd/rw slimline and it runs ubuntu quite well even with beryl.

That would be a start slow recommendation from me. I really like this machine.

New A couple of possibilities
I use a MacBook Pro because it runs Mac OS X and I can run Windows XP and Ubuntu with Parallels. You don't want a Mac, so...

[link|http://www.system76.com|http://www.system76.com] - these guys have Ubuntu laptops with all the bells and whistles and are pretty highly thought of among the local LUGs.

My boss run Ubuntu on a Sony Vaio that he's pretty fond of. Prior to that he had a Toshiba that he liked, too. I can find out model numbers if you're interested in either of those.

New Didn't say I did want a MAC... just that
I was fully up to speed on the information pertaining to Linux Goodness on them.

Its also quite possible to put Linux on a Macintel, or the older G series machines.

I am in the process of going to locations and making the rounds with LiveCDs to boot from.

KNOPPIX, Ubuntu and Sabayon-Mini. I guess I should also try Sidux.

Now, I just gotta find a decent place to buy an PCMCIA EVDO Cellular ("wireless") Broadband card. They don't look cheap, nor do the plans.

New Well, if you get luck on timing
or know someone at Sprint, IIRC the employee referral EVDO data plan is $50/month - and at certain times (mostly holidays) Sprint opens it up to everyone.

--Tony
New Coverage of my home is...
About 100dB* less (On Sprint) than my -100dBmV** (Verizon) already being received by my house already.

I've got to get an antenna vs Holding my laptop above my head while typing in a CLI window to get anything done.

So, I get a Verizon PC-Card a Sierra Wireless Air Card 595. $30 for a Window Mount mobile style Antenna.... and ~ $85 for a mast mount 3ft tall Omni Directional. Plus another $10 for a total of 30ft cable for perma mounting in the house.

And the Data plan isn't to bad, $65/month for upto 3.1Mbit/sec download ~1.1Mbit/sec upload.

Personally if it gets 700K/200K is all I need for mobile usage.

* dB a a funky measurement thinger.
  • +3.03dB == doubling in signal (energy)
  • -3.03dB == halving in signal (energy)
  • +10dB == 10 times increase in signal (energy)
  • -10dB == 10 times reduction (or 1/10th) the signal (energy)
  • +100dB == 10,000,000,000 times increase in signal (energy)
  • -100dB == 10,000,000,000 times reduction of signal (energy)
** Yes this is a serious exaggeration, along with *. I am actually on the fringe for the three cell towers around my home. So... we are talking much better signal levels than stated, but it sure feels like the levels I stated.
