. . is definitely not Microsoft's strong suit. I just reinstalled Windows XP on an HP and immediately updated it to SP2 (from CD). Then I went to Microsoft Update and it still downloaded and installed 92 patches and updates.

Consider the job: to build a structure based on live bone and meat that has to perform under extreme forces in one of the most corrosive environments on the planet. Has to look good too.
