First use of a theremin in a movie! (haven't fact-checked that claim with MI-6)

Still remember that sound, the velvet black&white scenes.. as the saucer circles the globe - a Perfect choice by Robert Wise.

(As regards mood settings, generally - methinks the theremin should play before/during any WH excrescence, whatsoever. Teach the tykes: This.. is how you indicate, musically - that you are now withinin a Massive BS-Field.)
