New New browser for Windows
Apple's [link|http://www.apple.com/safari/|Safari] now runs under Windows.

Has some quirks, but it is a beta.

One neat feature - all our HP and Xerox printers show up under the Bonjour bookmarks. Select the printer and be taken to the printer's HTTP status page. [link|http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/bonjour/|Bonjour] is Apple's Zero Config routines and is an optional to install when installing Safari.

New First Look

The resizable text boxes are slick - they have a video clip of that in action.

Didn't know about the "dimming" find, that looks slick.

New Not a class act on Apple's part.
[link|http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/06/12/safar_crashing_experience/|The Reg]:
Several international users who have downloaded the beta version noticed problems with loading bookmarks. When opening or importing bookmarks, Safari crashes. It also shows error messages such as: "Safari is missing important resources and should be reinstalled."

Most of the problems seem to occur when users use English versions of Windows, but with settings in another language or region.
I'm not going to bother even trying it for now.

New It is a beta in every sense of the word
It has bugs, some of which are security related. Some of which seem to be related to internationalised versions of Windows (I've installed it twice now, and it works fine (XPSP2 in both cases) but YMMV, because it's a beta) and some of which seem to be related to proxies.

One of the problems with the term "beta" is that Google have devalued it by issuing completed software and leaving "beta" on it for months and years.

Beta means probably still broken.

That said, it's fucking fast. If it works for you, it's going to be slick as snot.

On OS X, though, it's a different story. Rock solid.

New Re: Rock solid.
[link|http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/06/12/safari_security_bugs/|Not quite]:
David Maynor, who's best known for discovering an infamous Wi-Fi hack of Apple machines running third-party drivers, has already discovered four denial of service (ie crashing) and two remote code execution bugs with the software. "Not bad for an afternoon of idle fuzzing," Maynor writes. "One of the bugs found in the beta copy of Safari on Windows works on the production copy of OSX as well," he adds.
I'm guessing every time Steve Jobs has to put his black shirt on products get shipped no matter what state of development they're in.

New Yes, quite.
I've been using it more-or-less continuously since its release and it's not even farted wrong.

Remember, a beta has bugs. Bugs might be security-related. This isn't news.

New Except...
One of the security bugs works on the OS X version too, which isn't a beta.

Here we have a game that combines the charm of a Pentagon briefing with the excitement of double-entry bookkeeping. I don't get it.
