Access is such a pile of crap
Access can't import "VIA_FEB07.smt" because files that contain text must end in .txt, .csv, .tab or .asc. Because as you know, a file can only accessed according to the type indicated by it's extension. There is no way, even at the OS level, to just open the file as a binary stream and translate it according to a specification provided by the user.
And it can't import "VIA_FEB07.smt.txt", because Microsoft's programmers apparently couldn't handle the complexity involved in a file name with multiple periods.
Festering pile of crap.

Double crap
And it can't import "VIABOS_VIACHA_VIACHI_VIACLV_VIACOL_VIADC_VIADET_VIAKC_VIAMED_VIANY_VIATX_FEB07_SBS-rcvd5-24-07.txt". Because Access can't import files with names longer then 64 characters.

Well, clearly...
The problem is a PEBKAC issue. Get with the program, Jay. Sheesh.

'Course not!
Wouldn't want a member of the Only True Office Suite to be compatible with, and follow the rules of, the Only True Operating System that it Only runs on, now would we? Such a thing would imply Design, and that was outlawed at Micros~1 at about the same time Bob showed up...
[Edit: BTW, what's a PEBKAC?]

Now you know why I miss XBase
Xbase was not designed by OS-specific mouse-lovers. I have to use MS-Access almost every day, and it constantly reminds me why XBase is far better even though its 30 years old.
