Fugue, States: a game
At an impromptu dinner party last night mention was made (in what context I now forget, given the tangent that immediately followed) of the old pre-ZIP code state abbreviations, before the USPS standardized them into a terse two-character format (AK for Alaska, AL for Alabama, AR for Arkansas and so forth—some of our younger readers may not remember this era). Possibly because several of us were already a little giddy with wine, this led to a few minutes' delightful riffing on some serendipitous town names that would have been possible under the old, less codified system. By the time inspiration flagged I think we'd covered over half the states, but I'll repeat just a few here to get people started (unless, of course, it strikes everyone else in the stark sober light of morning as utterly lame, in which case—never mind):
Praise, Ala
Spelling, Ariz
Frieda, Colo
Tragic, Fla

Ah, C'mon
Is no one else inspired? Here are a few of last night's less-inspired offerings. Plenty of low-hanging fruit still out there:
Ottoman, Calif
Itsah, Wash
Idunno, Alaska*
*(I should mention that by the end of the evening entire state names were being accepted, e.g., Nonu, Texas.)
cordially,
