New Auto-Print to Files?
I am stumped by a problem that seems like it should be simple. There is commercial software that might do it, but managing licenses can get sticky around here, so I would like to avoid that if possible.

The problem is that I have an old application that automatically sends printouts to the default Windows printer. It replaces an old teletype system where messages come in at random intervals. Well, I wish to save those to file(s) instead of print them. Windows has a "save to file" option for a print setup, but it prompts for a file name *each* time a new message comes in. I need this to be automatic for there will be no user waiting to answer prompts. I even tried writing a GUI script to fill in the answer to the prompts, but it sometimes got confused when things got out of sync. There could be thousands of potential messages per day, so any one going wrong can clog up the works.

One can also specify a file-name for a port, but each print job overwrites the previous file. I need it to either append or create a new file (such as sequential numbers or a date stamp). They are generally text files. (Windows 2000)

Thanks in advanced

New It sounds like you're stuck.
If you've tried batch jobs that tie into rundll32.exe like [link|http://groups.google.com/group/alt.msdos.batch/browse_thread/thread/23a2b43c508fcb3/47ccdf7a6476e0a6?lnk=st&q=windows+print+to+file+script&rnum=2&hl=en#47ccdf7a6476e0a6|these], and that hasn't worked, then I think you'll have to try something like [link|http://www.printdistributor.com/|Print Distributor] that seems to claim to do what you want.

Caveat emptor. I haven't tried either of these techniques.

HTH a bit.

Cheers,
Scott.
New you have a linux/unix box floating around?
have the windows printer use its lpr feature to send the print job to a linux/unix box, Setup the linux/unix box to print to a file. Or if the app supports it just print directly to linux/unix.
thanx,
bill

New The solution to ANY Windows problem is always LI/UNIX :-)
You sound like me saying that tables and/or Xbase is the solution to everything. If I am a good boy, Heaven IT will be based on XbaOS.

I think I'll bite the commercial bullet and look into the Print Distributor 30-day-trial. Thanks guys for the suggestions.

New not really, its because I have done that before
had old dos 3.1 equipment that sent reports to a line printer. I needed to turn those into snmp traps for an alarm system. So I "printed" them to NT which forwarded via lpr to a sun box. The sun printing subsystem is/was actually a shell script that formatted the print job so instead of sending it to a real printer I wrapped the message into an snmp trap and sent it to the alarm system. Would have been just as easy to copy it to a file called file`date` which would have timestamped the filename to make them individual.
thanx,
bill

New Can you live with PDF?
Just use PDFCreator or something, if you can.

New You beat me to that idea!
PDF Creator acts like a printer and can be the default printer.
