New Dissenting states ask to see windows source
Wow.

The US States still pursuing Microsoft have upped the ante by asking the judge to force Microsoft to show them Windows' source code, their reasoning being that they need this to verify whether or not Microsoft is telling the truth when it says that producing a stripped-down and/or IE-free version of Windows isn't technically possible.

With this much manure around, there must be a pony somewhere.
New Might backfire
Who, outside Microsoft, would be qualified to examine the millions of lines and give a definitive answer?

Of course, there could be an ulterior motive here....

Not sure what that might be, but we *are* talking about politicians, after all.

Tom Sinclair
Speaker-to-Suits

He did of course sometimes have people horribly tortured to death, but this
was considered to be perfectly acceptable behaviour for a civic ruler and
generally approved of by the overhelming majority of citizens. [footnote:
The overhelming majority of citizens being defined in this case as everyone
not currently hanging upside down over a scorpion pit]

New I'll do it!
I believe that I'm qualified...shit, I've been debugging and working around the problems inherent in Micros~1 software for years...no, decades!, so I know I can do it. As far as the million lines of [spaghetti] code goes, I'll hire some "well-trusted" colleagues to help me
("well trusted" == anybody posting regularly at IWETHEY)

Any takers?

New Well you will get volunteers for one thing at least...
Microsoft claims to care about security. Why would they object to the inevitable free security audit? :-)

New Lots of eyeballs make any problem shallow.
I've waded through some hairy code in my day. They could put me on the team. And I know a bunch of other people who could help.

Sometimes "tolerance" is just a word for not dealing with things.
New No risk.
You think Microsoft will actually let anyone see the godawful tangle of crap they have made? Their code would be pasted all over the humor section of every hacker and programmer Web site worldwide.

New Didn't they already show the code wasn't inextricable?
Didn't the trial show that IE code could be separated from the OS?
Most of the work of government does not need to be done.
