I know this, I am in the same boat, currently.
For you, you have a writing skill. Find a niche you love and can own.
I've been looking around for things, IT work is indeed few and far between in West Michigan.
Recruiters are crap, the customers they have are "Hurry up and wait" mentality... things just don't have a good outlook.
[link|http://www.problogger.net/archives/2007/01/11/how-to-market-your-blog-in-2007/|Pro-Blogging] might be something you might want to consider. Writing, and being able to stay on task is a good thing, this is what can make you money.
Just to give you an idea, a friend I have currently has one blog he uses 1 hour a week to maintain it... $500/month. It is a niche market, but caters to them very well. He also has 4 other blogs about different things that he works on and researches and does foot work for (well e-mail and phone calls) and he currently makes about $800-$1200/month on each. He isn't a spammer, just well placed ads and referrals get him the money, along with submitting articles to some news organizations.
I wish I had the gumption to do that. It is just me being a flailing idiot when it comes to these things. Things could be better for me if I could get my act together.
