Need to get a new monitor
OK, I haven't even looked yet, but it's just so damned convenient to have this group mind available I thought I'd check here first.
I am constrained on space, 19 inch is all I can fit in the current setup I have and I really need a new monitor. The current one has "issues". I'm looking for a LCD with ability to handle a high end graphics card (if I buy one). Given how long LCD monitors have been available, I'm hoping for some cheap pixelicious goodness.

Do you want cheap, or good (or both)?
[link|http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/other/display/lcd-guide_26.html|PVA] screens apparently have a good compromise among color reproduction, viewing angle, and pixel speed.
Older monitors can be very cheap, but have restricted viewing angles (meaning the colors will vary across the screen).
I'd strongly consider this [link|http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824001069|19" Samsung], but if you don't want to spend that much, I'd pick a dollar amount and find the one with the best rating at that price point.
HTH a bit. Good luck!
Cheers, Scott. (The most recent LCD screen I bought was a 17" Samsung SyncMaster 710N so my personal experience is a little out of date. It's been good to us though.)

Remember that LCD specs are like printer specs
only slightly related to the truth. Most of the LCD specs are pretty useless for figuring out how good a monitor is for real world use.

I don't like the resolution limit of 900vert on those
In my opinion, Widescreen monitors less than 21 inches are too small.
Course, if you don't agree with that opinion...t'is a nice one at a good price.

21"...
I have everything setup in X, so that the 1280x1024 Firefox, OO.o Writer and so on have the same actual size on the 1600x1200 screen.
Now, if I went to 2048x1536... even for *ME* that is quite a bit smaller than I;d like. 1920x1440 was small as well.
I don't envy anyone needing 1280x1024 @ 21" size. Yikes.

This is why...
...I'm looking forward to the Leopard (OS X 10.5) upgrade - resolution independent interface.
My iMac has 1920x1200 on a 24" screen which is great most of the time, but there are times (early morning/late evening, mostly), when I just want to put it into Blind Man mode with Really Big Words And Pictures.

You can try it now
[link|http://www.interact-sw.co.uk/iangblog/2005/05/20/tigerresolution|Resolution Independence in OS X Tiger] In fact the feature I was most interested to see is one that isn't strictly an official feature of the OS. You have to install the developer tools to get to it, and run the 'Quartz Debugger' utility to switch it on. That feature is resolution independence.

Depends on what you're doing.
Also, you need to be careful that you're comparing apples-to-apples in pixel speed. [link|http://www.dansdata.com/askdan00009.htm|Gray to gray versus black to white to black].
We've got some LCDs at work that have big "2 ms!" stickers on them and they don't look any better than our 17" Samsung [link|http://www.samsung.com/au/products/monitors/tft/710n.asp?page=Specifications|710N] with its 12 ms response time. In fact, I think they look worse.
Cheers, Scott.

Re: 19 inch
Measure your current monitor, probably horizontally, to see how much room you have. Many of the LCD monitors have a small frame around the display compared to the CRT kind. You may very well be able to buy a 20" LCD.

Hmm. I think I screwed up.
I forgot monitors are measured on the diagonal. I have 19 inches horizontal space available. What that works out to in diagonal, I don't know. 21?

At 4:3, almost 24"
23.75" to be precise. Different for a widescreen monitor.

Pretty much 19" diagonal is the ...
Cut off for "Cheap and good resolution"
Once you go to 20.1 or better, the price skyrockets. If the price for a 20" monitor is sub $200, don;t expect very much in terms of quality.
19" LCDs do have some very good deals, but you really have to look at what you buy, BEFORE you buy it. So, IMO Samsung has had some good monitors for a long time, CRT and LCD.
It is up to you to decide.
And BTW, my 21" Monitors I just got recently, actually look better than the Samsung 204B I had a while ago. I had to "turn them down". I am also using 100Hz refresh rate.
Very nice. If it weren't SDB, I'd be plum as happy as I could get.
