The fore mentioned generic tuner is $89, cheapest I've seen so far. Does anyone know anything about it? Or any advice re stand alone, over the the air HDTV tuners they willing to share with me?
Seamus
New it appears to convert hd signals to analog, is that what you
want?
thanx,

New To clarify
This box is to receive an HD signal and downgrade it for playback on a non-HD set.

New That is what I am looking for
I too thought they would down to about $50 by now.

This one is about half the price of the next cheapest tuner I've seen. I don't want to spend a lot to occasionally watch tv on an older set.

New Do you really need it now?
Unless you're wanting to watch something that's not broadcast via NTSC(like the secondary channels with weather and traffic info), it might be worth your time to wait the 8 months for the [link|http://www.ntia.doc.gov/otiahome/dtv/dtvcoupon.html|Digital-to-Analog Converter Box Coupon Program] to start up in January. Each household can request two coupons, each for $40 off the price of an HD Tuner. I imagine once that starts up the price for tuners will drop to $40. Heck, I may even take advantage of it and get a tuner for my Commodore 1084S monitor in my study.

New Guess I was a little off
[link|http://z.iwethey.org/forums/render/content/show?contentid=48844|back in 2002] I figured tuners would be down to $50. Of course, back then, the switch-off of NTSC was scheduled for 2007. Since it's been pushed back to 2009, there's no demand for HDTV tuners for old sets.

I've had HD for a while, but get my signals via an HD cable box so haven't had to buy a tuner. I found [link|http://hometheaterspot.com/fusionbb/|HomeTheaterSpot.com] to be very helpful when I was deciding which set to buy.
