Sam Harris is compact, reserved and, despite the polemical tone of his books, friendly and mild. Warren, one of the best-known pastors in the world, started Saddleback in 1980; now 25,000 people attend the church each Sunday. Harris is softer-spoken; paragraphs pour out of him, complex and fact-filled\ufffd\ufffd\ufffdas befits a Ph.D. student in neuroscience. At NEWSWEEK's invitation, they met in Warren's office recently and chatted, mostly amiably, for four hours. Jon Meacham moderated. Excerpts follow. The articles long and I have not read it yet. If the contenders cannot see the necessity of looking beyond hunter/gatherer superstitious roots for a few milliseconds; (if either one cannot conceive of a 'spiritual being' NOT belonging to the F. W. Woolworth corporate religion of ter ancestors) - then You will get this sort of exchange. The 'blinkers' will likely be listed on the coroner's Cause-of-Death forensic report. How did that quip go? ~ I contend that we are both atheists. I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours. ..at least this too-concise comment avoids Official sophistry, and focusses the attention upon the poverty of comparing [Absolutes] via transistor logic.
