Linux hardware rec please
I need a new Linux box. Kubuntu.
My budget is $600.
I don't care much about graphics (2D KDE for me) or sound (whatever on the MB). I need to plug in my IBM keyboard and Trackball (or get USB adapters if such a thing exists).
I care about CPU (but not that much, everything is quick nowadays), memory (at least 1GB, but I have lots lying around if I can reuse) and SATA connections. I have to be able to plug in my current 2 x 300GB SATA drives.
GBit ethernet would be nice, but not a requirement.
I already have a decent DVD/CD writer, so default cheap CD is good until I swap it myself.
Any recommendations?
Oh, and low noise from the power supply if possible, I've gotten used to quiet room since my monster crashed.
Thanks.

Get a refurbished Compaq.
I've bought 2 or 3 machines from their refurbished store over the years and always had good luck with them.
[link|http://www.shopping.hp.com/product/outlet_store/refurb_desktops/compaq_presario/4/storefronts/EX325AAR%2523ABA|SR1950NX] (it's out of stock at the moment). $430. [link|http://www.skarulis.com/?cat=17|It works with Ubuntu].
I haven't bought that particular model, but have had good luck with Compaq Athlon machines. Use the extra money for the monitor or more memory or ...
HTH a bit.
Cheers, Scott.

There are lots on eBay.
e.g. [link|http://cgi.ebay.com/Compaq-Presario-sr1950nx-Computer_W0QQitemZ150105559753QQcategoryZ140072QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem|This store] lists 41 available for $437.25 each + ground shipping.
Caveat emptor, but it might be worth checking out. It has a DVD RW drive while the one at the Compaq store was just a reader, I think.
Good luck.
Cheers, Scott.

This one looks nice

Think it'll run Linux?

It should, but I haven't checked it carefully.
This guy seems to indicate that he had [link|http://gvriese.blogspot.com/2006/06/computer-woes.html|Ubuntu running on it].
With a little digging, it should be possible to determine the motherboard and all the details - maybe by downloading the manual for the system from HP. I can't imagine that it uses anything that Kubuntu would have trouble with, but I can't guarantee it of course.
HTH. Good luck!
Cheers, Scott.

I hate the windows tax
Without it, tax and shipping would hit my goal. Or come close.

Re: Linux hardware rec please
Via their outlet store ([link|http://www.dell.com/outlet|http://www.dell.com/outlet]), Dell sells low-end PowerEdge servers without charging the Microsoft tax. Every so often they go on sale. I picked up a 400SC two years ago for $400, put FC3 on it, later upgrading to FC5, and then Ubuntu, with nary an issue.

Can't. Or won't
A server is too noisy, and I can't trust their desktops to work for me.

The 4xxSC line is fairly quiet
I have noise problems for other stuff, but not the (non pizza box) Dell servers.

PS/2->USB adapters exist.
They take a little hunting, but they are around. Mine was about AU$15.

Best to get one on a try-before-you-buy basis
We had some appalling experiences with these at work. Whether it works or not seems to depend on the device, the adapter and the USB controller to which you're connecting.
We gave up and simply sourced USB devices.
I assume, of course, you're talking about the things that let you plug PS/2 devices (i.e. mice and keyboards) into USB ports.
The other ones, that get shipped with most USB mice and let you plug your USB mouse into a PS/2 slot, work much, much better.

Colour me surprised.
The one I got is made by "Comsol". It has never given me a problem. Mind you, it's always been into Dell hardware, except for my Happy Hacking keyboard. YMMV, I guess.

System76
Local (Denver) company that the LUGs and Ubuntu groups speak highly of.
They have [link|http://system76.com/index.php/cPath/2_52|this mini chassis system] starting at $599 and [link|http://system76.com/index.php/cPath/2_6|mid-tower chassis system] starting at $399 - all systems come with ubuntu preinstalled - no M$ tax.

Now that I've read more carefully
You have drives so why not go to newegg or tigerdirect and buy a barebones. Tigerdirect is selling dual-core 3.2Ghz machines for sub 300.

Doesn't include CD or Hard disk, but I got plenty'o'those.
Has 1GB of ram.
I prefer Core2 over P-D for speed, low power, and VIIV.

No ram..but 512 is 30 bucks a pop. 1024 is pretty cheap too. Mobo has gigabit ethernet.

Perfect
I just asked the company I do consulting for to order one for me. Added the hard disk (another couldn't hurt) and 2GB of memory. Totalled out at $700 for something that is about 4 times faster than my last box.
Thanks

You'll love that case.
I've seen a couple around here. Just be careful about how tight you tighten screws. My only gripe.
