New OT: Interesting thought I just had
When we're reading a news story, or getting it second-hand from Bill, some of us seem to think it matters where that info came from. Almost as if knowing the source of the information will color our evaluation of that information, in a way that we want it to be colored.

So if we know who is giving the president his information, would that give us useful information on which to evaluate the outcome? Or should we, when it comes to politics, base our opinion strictly on the public policies that come out the other side of the process?

New I run into that every day
in a Yahoo groups community heavily populated by people who have exposed themsleves as white, conservative/Neoconservative, Republican viewpoint accepting posters. Nearly anything I link to gets slammed because it comes from the "MainStream Media (MSM)" which everyone knows, is "librul" and thus always wrong. Therefore, anything of value in the post is ignored because they attack the source of the post.

Naturally, over the past year I've decided that "if you can't beat them, join them" and attack THEIR sources as being totally biased to the Right. Ex: Fox News.

They see their sources as being "right" just as I see my sources as being "right", on topics like mankind's contribution to global warming, for example.

It's been reduced to no more than a "Yes it is - No it isn't" daily pissing match; to the point where one person left and created his own community and invited several of us to join. However, I've questioned him to the point that we're creating exactly that from which we're running away from; namely, a community of people who pretty much share the same viewpoint on most subjects and have disdain with those with whom we disagree. There's no real difference between our community compared to the original - we're like the "tails" side of the coin to their "heads" side.

"Chicago to my mind was the only place to be. ... I above all liked the city because it was filled with people all a-bustle, and the clatter of hooves and carriages, and with delivery wagons and drays and peddlers and the boom and clank of freight trains. And when those black clouds came sailing in from the west, pouring thunderstorms upon us so that you couldn't hear the cries or curses of humankind, I liked that best of all. Chicago could stand up to the worst God had to offer. I understood why it was built--a place for trade, of course, with railroads and ships and so on, but mostly to give all of us a magnitude of defiance that is not provided by one house on the plains. And the plains is where those storms come from." -- E.L. Doctorow
