Bush to increase the size of the military.
No details yet, just seeing the headlines over at MSNBC and ABC News.
It's getting a bit drafty in here. :P

it will pass, its needed. every congress critter
has national guard (weekend warriars) doing a 3rd Iraq deployment. The regular military is too small for the mission(s). Home folks would be the first to acknowledge a larger regular army is needed to rest the reserves. thanx, bill

We don't need "the mission"
Time to bail. I think simply pulling up stakes and leaving is the answer. Furthermore, I'm tired of paying for this shit. Increasing levels is throwing good after bad.
Latest I hear is Saudi Arabia "warning" they will act to protect their own people if US leaves. Some have predicted their method of retalition will take the form of increasing production to drive oil prices below profitability to wreck Iraq's cash flow. I say - Bring. It. On.

we cant support 2 insurgencies much less "the mission"
being a full blown war in 2 theaters simulataneously. [link|http://www.antiwar.com/pat/?articleid=10193|http://www.antiwar.c.../?articleid=10193] Retired Gen. Kevin Ryan agrees: "Today, the 37 combat brigades of the active Army are almost totally consumed by the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. With all units either deployed, returning from deployment, or preparing to deploy, there is none left to prepare for other contingencies."
Yet, adds Ryan, "Our published defense strategy requires a military that can defend our homeland, sustain two major wars, be present in key regions abroad, and fight a global war on terrorism. thanx, bill

Armed Forces have been short from Clinton's first term.
The "peace dividend" was overdone.

We don't have to do that anymore....
Bush dropped the requirement from having to fight two wars down to one.
I'm just glad he did it and not Clinton.

Hah. "upstakes and leave?".
I heard an expert on the radio saying that to set it up to leave, you have to send in *more* troops first. His argument for that was long and complex but IIRC it boiled down to the fact that you have to change the way the troops are deployed so as to stage a withdrawal without it becoming a rout. It's this change that requires more troops to start with.
I still think the US-centric view of the world is a key problem. Nowhere near enough soldiers have much idea of the local language and culture.
Wade.
