I could go for Mt Tam
since I haven't been up it before, although I've hiked up Mission Peak. However, you guys might have to go easy, since I haven't hiked up any hills in way too long.
One question about Mt Tam: how are the trails in the winter? In the East Bay (EBPRD), the trails are just dirt (e.g. Mission Peak, Pleasanton Ridge) and are generally in very poor shape during the winter, due to the effects of rain (wash outs) and cows walking in mud.

I haven't been up any in that area
My last hike was last summer.
I am probably in the worst shape of all...but if the trails are good I am up for trying it.

If the choice is Mt Tam, it'd be good to get feedback
from Karsten, since he could describe where to meet. For me, starting at sometime between 9 & 10 AM at the meeting place to be described by Karsten would work.
The closest I've got on the ground is seeing the turnoff for Mt Tam on Highway 101.
I'm interested in hearing if Carl and Ashton can make it or if they have any better suggestions.
Based on the lack of public response, it seems like I'm the only person who might make it on Thurs; if that's the case, I'm fine with either not doing anything or waiting for a phone call on Thurs from Ben.

Tam meet & route
My thinking is this: assemble at the Tam High School parking lot, 700 Miller Avenue Mill Valley, CA 94941, between 9:30 and 10am. You can reach this via the CA Hwy 1 exit from 101, following Almonte Blvd. as it becomes Miller Avenue. [link|http://maps.yahoo.com/py/pmap.py?Pyt=Tmap&addr=700+miller+av&csz=Mill+Valley,+CA+94941-2926&city=Mill+Valley&state=CA&slt=37.891100&sln=-122.527000&mlt=37.883100&mln=-122.517000&zip=94941-2926&country=us&BFKey=&BFCat=&BFClient=&mag=9&cs=9&name=&desc=|Map]. Note that you bear right at the Arco gas station, turning off Hwy 1.
I'll be reachable on my cell at 650 575-8512 if anyone gets lost on the way.
From there we'll head up the mountain, pooling cars (parking can be limited). My truck seats three friends or five people I don't like that much (extra cab -- usable, but cramped). I'm thinking of starting at the Rock Spring trailhead, heading through Mountain Theater and West Point Inn, then hitting the summit. Total elevation gain is pretty light, and most of the grade is easy, with a short steep bit at the end, southern exposure most of the way, excellent view of the City and Bay, as well as Marin Headlands and the Pacific Ocean. I'll be bringing binoculars for pointing out views.
Trails are quite passible in winter -- there's a sandstone clay on most parts with good drainage, and we've not had appreciable precipitation for a week (not since moving day ;-). There may be a couple of muddy spots, but otherwise clean walking.
Temps are coolish -- 50s and 60s. The summit's usually sunny but can be windy, bring a good windproof jacket and dress with layers (t-shirt, fleece, windbreaker is good) as conditions may vary. I'll be bringing both shorts and jeans and work out what I wear when we get there, along with a fleece and windbreaker.
There's food on the route at both West Point (snack bars and tea) and the summit (a snack shack). Water is available on the route, I'll also carry some. Total distance is ~6 miles, call it a 2-3 hour hike. And if you fall completely apart, we can leave you and return by car -- there's paved road all the way up. Sturdy footwear -- sneakers, Doc Martins, or boots (you don't need alpine gear) is recommended.
I'm still somewhat sans personal email though I hope to get something set up tonight at home. karsten@freerun.com will work in an emergency.
And you're more than welcome to invite friend(s) or family to join us.

Recap
The deed was done. Todd, Tony, Ben, Carl, myself, and, um, special guest. Hope Ashton's worked off the cold.
A slight delay (for all the right reasons) in getting things underway temporized by a trip to the neighboring Starbucks. Absolutely beautiful day (no, that's not normal CA weather, Ben, really, it's not. We insist.), I'm pretty certain we could just make out the Sierras -- 170 mile visibility -- as well as a panorama from the Faralons to SF, Montara Mountain, Moffit Field, San Jose, Mission Peak, Mt. Diablo, Berkeley, Mt. Saint Helena, and Point Reyes. Route as specified, stops for photo-ops en route (Tony's got a digital camera, be afraid, be very afraid). Lots of good conversation and a few sore muscles (mostly jaw from what I could tell). Chili dogs, bagels, and hot tea at the summit, along with several lungfuls of biting wind.
Thanks all, next plans are a Napa housewarming of significant proportions.

Thought about y'all
as I was motoring up the I5 on Friday afternoon, and Saturday going back down the 99 (emergency call; I was in SoCal at the time). If I'd known I was going to be in the area, I'd have tried to leech on to the group.
Hope everybody had a good time!
Regards, Ric

We did, we did
It was a lot of fun. I just wish we had longer and more people. :-)
Cheers, Ben
