New Thinking about NAS? You might want to read this.
The hardware bug has been nibbling at me, so I've been thinking about getting a Network Attached Storage system for my home network. It would let me minimize the multiple duplicates of information on multiple PCs, and let the PCs and Macs have easy access to the same files.

Yeah, that's the ticket. ;-)

I'm thinking that Gbit Ethernet is required for growth headroom and for the prospect of reasonable transfer speeds. There are quite a few boxes at Newegg that sound interesting. But, it makes sense to do more reading before shelling out $500+, so I did some looking around.

[link|http://www.nber.org/sys-admin/linux-nas-raid.html|This] page at the National Bureau of Economic Research is an eye-opening commentary on issues I hadn't considered. If you're thinking about NAS, it's a page that you might want to read.

Things we wish we'd known about NAS devices and Linux Raid

Realistically, I probably should look into [link|http://www.openfiler.com/|OpenFiler] before I think about buying more hardware...

Cheers,
Scott.
New Guess I should have read the comments before...
They address my concerns and comments nearly perfectly.

New NSLU2 + a big USB drive or 2 is a low-end solution
An NSLU2 isn't going to win on speed, but it's quiet and a decent UPS will keep it and a big USB drive alive for quite a while. For the price, you can buy a matching pair and back one up to the other.
New Thanks! It looks like a nice box and some vibrant projects.
