There's a DSL router at .110, which is the default route for all the machines (they get told that by DHCP). Somehow my machine's routing table (I'm on Win98) has an extra entry: 192.0.0.0 255.0.0.0 -> 192.168.0.35 metric 1 1) Where the heck did this come from? and 2) Why can't I delete it so packets to 192.x.x.x hosts go out the router? Windows just keeps telling me "the route specified was not found", and yet there it is every time! Any insight? That's her, officer! That's the woman that programmed me for evil!

But I hacked/fixed by adding the same bogus route again, but with a cost of 20, then added the same route, but sent it to the route with cost 1. Ugly. Anyone have a better idea? That's her, officer! That's the woman that programmed me for evil!

I can only assume my NIC (or Windows) is trying to be smarter than I am, since I always have unremovable routes of 192.0.0.0 and 224.0.0.0 added. But the issue is, I need 192.0.0.0 to go out the router, and only mask 192.168.0.255 for inbound (i.e. - we're only using those 254 addresses on the LAN). I must be missing something... Shouldnt it read that 192.0.0.0(entire 192 network) should be forwarded to the router? Yer second 192.168.0.255 is redundant you have already set that route. The 224 route is something I have seen ms doing lately but am not enlightened on the cause. Get rid of the 255. route. Post #3,375 by ronelson 8/1/01 8:46:45 AM Reply	Keep It Simple, Stupid Your netmask is too big. Make it 255.255.0.0 instead of 255.0.0.0 and all will be well. Stop hacking your routing table :) If you somehow need or want that big network, make it 10.0.0.0/255.0.0.0. Rob Nelson ronelson@vt.edu
Post #3,432 by tseliot 8/1/01 12:10:04 PM Reply	Not my idea. :( I didn't put that entry in there, and I certainly wouldn't have put in that stupid netmask. The entry just appears and disappears on its own, and what's worse..I can't delete the entry. &$#(&^ Windows. Things are better now with the new firewall, though...it might have had something to do with the old DSL router, which used to be the first hop--it had a DHCP server built in, which I turned off, but--you just never know what 'off' means these days. That's her, officer! That's the woman that programmed me for evil!
