Currently doing a Dapper to Edgy Kubuntu upgrade
Slow. 39% of core downloaded - 1h46m into the process.
Grrrr.
Of course, most likely I'm gonna trash my system.

Running it, too.
I have dapper running in a parallels VM on my mac - it's currently upgrading itself to edgy.

How many ram disks is it going to create! Again and again!

Well, that was a mistake!
Reading the open bugs shows a lot of problems with ATI cards.
Reinstalled previous version, put back my network configuration, pulling down Firefox right now.
Sometimes it's nice to start clean again.
Of course, this desktop was created about 3 weeks ago, so not a lot of time for cruft accumulation.

Seems to have worked fine here.
Haven't seen any issues yet.

Ok. Given a possibly dangerous upgrade...
What does it get you? Is there some particular benefit worthy of risking a reimage of ones machine?

All upgrades are potentially dangerous.
Any sensible answer to your question would really just involve a large cut and paste from the website, so it's probably just as easy to direct you to [link|https://wiki.ubuntu.com/EdgyReleaseNotes|https://wiki.ubuntu.com/EdgyReleaseNotes]

Yes, obviously. Thanks for the link.
As the previous version isn't seriously broken, I was wondering what compelling reason there might be to upgrade. I tend to have a jaded view of advertising, so I was asking users why they were undertaking this. If it's just "Oooh, newer! Shiny!", then I'm not terribly interested in screwing with it. If it does something significantly better, than I may entertain the switch. I probably should have been more clear initially.

I try to maintain "current" when I can.
My home PC is running an old broken version of Mepis. Lots of things won't install, requiring more current libs, which in turn refuse to install due to conflicts.
So, my work PC is a relatively new Kubuntu install, 1 version back, when means upgrades should go pretty seemless (I hoped, I was wrong). That way I maintain a greater likelyhood of installing new stuff.
That's OK.
I'm waiting on a couple of LCD screens. When they show up, I'll juggle out the video card and install fresh.
It takes me under 30 minutes to put my desktop in working order (at work), since almost all I use is remote access to other systems.

Better font handling
at least on my machine.
Other than that, and general upgrades across all packages...I don't know if I can identify one single compelling reason to do it.
BUT, I used the software updater method...and it was really simple. You have to call the update manager from the CL and add the -c switch...and off you go.
