My daughter's high school just got locked down
while eating lunch 10 minutes ago, the television in the background cut into the soap opera to announce that LifeFlight just landed outside the school. According to the announcer, some idiot brought a handgun to school and somehow shot himself in the back.
Am hitting the local TV station web sites to see if any of them have posted this yet. Will follow-up when I have more info.

"Chicago to my mind was the only place to be. ... I above all liked the city because it was filled with people all a-bustle, and the clatter of hooves and carriages, and with delivery wagons and drays and peddlers and the boom and clank of freight trains. And when those black clouds came sailing in from the west, pouring thunderstorms upon us so that you couldn't hear the cries or curses of humankind, I liked that best of all. Chicago could stand up to the worst God had to offer. I understood why it was built--a place for trade, of course, with railroads and ships and so on, but mostly to give all of us a magnitude of defiance that is not provided by one house on the plains. And the plains is where those storms come from." -- E.L. Doctorow

Hope she, and everyone there, are Ok.
Actually, I hope it's a [link|http://www.kxan.com/Global/story.asp?S=5473189|copycat] prank or something similar and not something serious.
Hang in there.
Cheers, Scott.

too early for real info
the tv web sites say very little. It hasn't been released whether or not the person is a student. One rumor is that it was a botched suicide attempt.
Wife can't get through to the school - the switchboard circuits are overloaded; all she gets is a fast busy signal.

you can access police-band transmissions streamed to the 'Net; google has a good number of them - try to see if you can hear what's going on...

Yes
latest info:
- the 16-year-old student shot himself and died at the hospital.
- he shot himself in the school's courtyard during his lunch break. So, FWIW, he did it outside, in a place where he wouldn't hurt anybody else. However, it was in full view of one cafeteria.
- A note was found at the scene, according to authorities. So it was a suicide.
According to one radio site, since District schools don't have metal detectors and doesn't conduct routine searches, several parents are demanding that these ideas be put into effect immediately.

Yeah sure
because the probability that another gun incident will occur at that school within the next 10 years is about one in 2700. For such odds, heck yes - spend it like a sailor.
