New But what will we tell the dead children?
Since Beep and admin are being (whimper! snivel!) beastly to me over in Politics, I have limped over to this sanctuary for spiritual solace. I'm pleased be the first to report on an exciting new theological development:
Pope Benedict has decided to keep limbo in limbo a little longer.

For nearly a year the Church's International Theological Commission has been working on a document expected to recommend he formally abolish limbo, the place where centuries of Catholic tradition held that babies who die without baptism went.

...

The Pope said a mass with members of the commission on Friday morning, but, contrary to some media speculation, he did not mention the concept in his homily and announced no decision.

The media reports had said the Pope would formally cancel limbo on Friday but a key participant, Italian Archbishop Bruno Forte, said the 30-member commission were still fine-tuning their document.

"The Pope did not mention it today in his homily. We are still working on the document. No vote has been taken. I think nothing will be ready to hand up to him until 2007," he told Reuters by telephone after the morning mass with the Pontiff.

Still, it is common knowledge in Church circles that limbo's days are numbered.

...

Limbo, which comes from the Latin word meaning "border" or "edge," was considered by medieval theologians a state or place reserved for the unbaptized dead, including good people who lived before the coming of Christ.

According to Catholic teaching, baptism removes the original sin which has stained all souls since the fall from grace in the Garden of Eden.

Though never formally part of Church doctrine, limbo was taught to Catholics as late as the 1960s in many countries and has entered many languages to mean a state of suspension.

The old Baltimore Catechism, a question-and-answer format book used to teach religion to generations of American Catholics for much of the 20th century, said of limbo:

"Persons, such as infants, who have not committed actual sin and who, through no fault of theirs, die without baptism, cannot enter heaven; but it is the common belief they will go to some place similar to Limbo, where they will be free from suffering, though deprived of the happiness of heaven."
I think that the sensible thing for the Church to do here is to let all the dead babies into heaven, but hang onto limbo so that we can accommodate the stem cells.

devoutly,
Die Welt ist alles, was der Fall ist.
New the mormons will get around to it sooner or later
They have been baptising the dead for some time now. Wonder what all those poor muslims will think when on day in paradise sctupping a virgin sucking down a cold grappa and a few seconds later is whisked into a room, shave and a haircut handed a hymnal and told to report to duty in the heavenly choir?

Limbo is a useful tool for conversions, purgatory needs to go first I think.

Stem Cells are food until a soul injection is done at about 8 weeks into gestation.
thanx,

New OmiGawd! dya think -
it's the same committee that cobbled up Revelations (for a monk's first-year hazing ritual - til the parchment got leaked by the char nunlady and -) !?

(Perhaps if the dead babies are transmogrified into new sperm, presumably of a strain that doesn't ever make it to the Promised Gland.. It's better than outright snuffing, one supposes. If not examined too closely - and who does That?)

New Theological systems are closed systems...
...they only make sense in relationship to the overall system. Personally, I think limbo and purgatory were answers to theological questions which are no longer particularly relevant. (Attribute these to the writings of Augustine).

The correct theological answer should not be that these children are guaranteed heaven, nor that they are doomed to hell (or limbo). The correct answer is that neither the church nor biblical scholars can answer the question of the fate of the non-baptized - that's something that is outside of the doctrines - let the almighty be the judge over these matters.

Of course, this is not likely to be a satisfying answer to those who want a yes or no. And those on the outside of the theological systems are just happy to point out the internal inconsistencies (or loose end) - the interest has nothing to do with whether a resolution is actually possible.
New Brevity Award
And one of the best nonconfrontational ridicule-free ones I recall seeing :-)

Yesss.. perhaps the Church [pick any] really needs to explain to their flock that -- there are imaginable occasions when We Don't Know [..and Neither Do You, Bunky.]

(Ed: Should be said er, Often? Bunky: late-night Tee Vee preachers, natch)

New A variatoin / refinement
Instead of "We don't know," which leaves open the possibility that we might figure it out, prefer "$Diety didn't choose to trust us with that knowledge." IOW not only do we not know, it's because we aren't meant to know, so don't go off making up your own rules to fill in the blanks.

New LOL! :-D
New Can we still do the dance?
'Cause I am all about the squatting under a (short(er)) pole to music thing. There may possibly be nothing funner to do while wearing bermuda shorts and experiencing a sunburn.

New Prevert!

New They'd better not close Limbo - we all know . . .
. . what'll happen to all those evicted souls. They're going to dump them all on Los Angeles' skid row just like everyone else does. We have enough lost souls here already.

New Your not getting away from politics that easy
The amusing thing about this is that from what I have heard, it is essentially a political decision. The missionaries working the middle east are saying that Islam puts the dead children straight into heaven, while Catholicism leaves them Limbo. And given the number of dead children in the region, this is interfering with conversion work.
