Okay, I'm stupid. I'm going to buy a car.
Yeah, I know, I'm poking the fate bear. It will probably end up under the wheels of a semi three days after I get it. I'm tired of leaving dance halls at 11:00pm and getting home at 1:00am.
I'm thinking ~$5k, 4 door sedan, Toyota, Honda, Acura, unless somebody has a better idea. Main goals are safety, reliability, and fuel economy, in that order.
Hurt me if you must, but let the duckie go!

Had a Geo Prism.
I'd like to get something just slightly up the food chain next time, something I won't feel embarrassed about taking a date out in.

Might try finding a sentra
nissan has nearly the same reliablity specs as the toyota and honda but depreciates a bit more...so you may get a bit younger of a car for the same price.

Non-Toyota /Honda Japanese car
Hondas and Toyotas keep their value too well, might as well buy them new. Of course, if you find a steal on an old Accord, Camry, Integra, Legend, Lexus SC300, etc, go for it. But you'll get a newer or bigger car for your budget with another brand.
Take a look at Nissan, Mazda, Subaru. Carfax is worth checking on the individual car. Consumer's Digest's reliability numbers are worth looking at. Edmunds.com has a lot of good pricing information.
My 1993 Nissan 240SX is 14 years old, and has had very few problems - I think about $3000 in repairs over the 12 years and 80,000 miles I've owned it. My four year old Mazda has been perfect so far.

Put reliability at the top of your list.
Safety's an illusion. If you get hit by a 44-tonner, the NCAP rating doesn't mean anything at all.
The principle component of safety is you, in any event.
Get an old Lexus. They never break.

Small modifier -
It seems that there's a small contingent of Lexus buyers who play a game with oil changes: they Don't. These brag at the local watering hole.. "Hey, Bubba - I gots 65K on *my* oil.." It works for the first couple years - then they trade.
This is hearsay from an ex-Lexus salesman, apparently in truthiness mode. It also fits certain shallow personalities I've encountered, ie. I'd still want a look inside the valve cover re recent flush, compression check etc. etc.
Other reports are as you suggest - if all the services are done, they run and run. But a bit boring and typ soft suspension, so as not to rumple the Armani.
