Is this rumor started by that soup for brains guy who always puts out these Mac rumors? some of his old ones: #1 SOYO will make PowerMac clone motherboards to work in ATX cases. Build your own Mac clones. #2 MacOS will be designed with a library to run Windows and DOS code natively. #3 Red Hat to buy out Be, Sony to buy out Apple. Etc. Rumors like this must have been made to boost up the stock he bought and couldn't get rid of at a higher price? The latest rumor appears to be AOL buying out Red Hat? #4 IBM's RS/6000 series and POP PowerPC systems to run MacOS 8.0 as the main OS. #5 Apple marketshare to reach 33% of the market. PC makers start going out of business because the Mac is giving them the run for the money. #6 Apple makes a new PDA based on MacOS which outsells the PalmPilot. #7 Apple to use AMD chips to get into the WINTEL market. (This rumor, apparently has been recycled). The only thing that I can see happen is that AMD makes a PC based on its latest and greatest chip, and makes a deal with Apple to bundle [link\|http://www.opensource.apple.com/\|"Darwin"] on it. If it does well, Apple may consider porting OSX to the AMD platform. That is most likely as close to the truth that this rumor is going to get? "Will code Visual BASIC for cash."
Post #26,917 by Another Scott 2/1/02 5:45:28 PM Reply	This, from TheInquirer, makes a lot of sense to me. [link\|http://www.theinquirer.net/01020211.htm\|Apple could easily migrate to X86]. Much of the code is portable, and Apple has experience running on different CPUs. But it doesn't make sense to run MacOS on a new architecture unless the existing CPU architecture has run out of steam. This is because some of the MacOS would have to be emulated until all the code was ported. Without a substantial speed delta in going to a new CPU, there won't be any performance benefit. So don't expect MacOS-X/86 any time soon. Cheers, Scott.

Even if Apple wanted to make that switch, they would be best off either picking a 64-bit chip, or waiting until the dust clears somewhat. Cheers, Ben
Post #26,972 by nking 2/2/02 11:02:15 AM Reply	The only thing that I can see happen is that Apple uses both a PowerPC and an AMD 64 bit chip in their new Macs. The OS will be written to use both processors. Maybe the AMD can be used for emulation software to emulate a PC, and run the X86 code natively while emulating the rest of the PC (BIOS, Video, Audio, etc). "Will code Visual BASIC for cash."
