New Letter to Smithsonian Magazine.
Dear Editor:

I must respond to letter writer Betty Rome's tentative equation of archaeology with tomb raiding.

Artifacts found in these tombs belong first to the artists who conceived and executed them and secondly to the world as a whole, of which those artists were a part.

By power of wealth through accident of birth some were able to hoard these works and sequester them. It is true this selfishness preserved many works for our delight in a later day, but that was not their intent.

I see no fault in bringing these works back into view.

New Hmm. Well, cemetaries aren't permanent.
[link|http://www.straightdope.com/mailbag/mcemeteryrights.html|Do cemetery plots have expiration dates?].

I don't know where to draw the line between respect for the dead on the one hand and the practicalities of space limitations and learning from the past on the other. Arguments can be made for cultural sensitivity, to be sure, but...

Cheers,
Scott.
New I know of 2 cemetaries that weren't permanent.
1. In Lombard, IL, just west of Yorktown Mall at Highland and 22nd street, one was dug up years ago so that a developer could put in a "upscale" housing development.

2. Chicago's mayor Daley has won FEDERAL approval to get eminent domain of a cemetary in Bensenville so that they can add another runway to O'Hare airport.

"Chicago to my mind was the only place to be. ... I above all liked the city because it was filled with people all a-bustle, and the clatter of hooves and carriages, and with delivery wagons and drays and peddlers and the boom and clank of freight trains. And when those black clouds came sailing in from the west, pouring thunderstorms upon us so that you couldn't hear the cries or curses of humankind, I liked that best of all. Chicago could stand up to the worst God had to offer. I understood why it was built--a place for trade, of course, with railroads and ships and so on, but mostly to give all of us a magnitude of defiance that is not provided by one house on the plains. And the plains is where those storms come from." -- E.L. Doctorow

New The airport one is IMO less outrageous
An airport is clearly a "public good". A housing development is clearly not. Besides that, it's easier to relocate a housing project than a runway extension project.

New Except
The cemetary is not only in a different town, it's in a completely different county.

It's flabbergasting to give one city the right to do whatever they want over another city's land.

On top of that, Daley has gone on record multiple times saying that he won't expand Midway Airport because of the impact upon the airport's neighbors. NOTE: Midway is completely within Chicago's city limits, while O'Hare required some pretty fancy manuevering years ago to steal it away from the suburbs that completely surround it.

And Daley and the Cook County Democrats have been fighting against the creation of a third airport approximately 50 miles south of the city. They claim that it would interfere with the other two airports' operations. In reality, they don't want it outside of their political control (patronage jobs, sweetheart no-bid contracts, etc.)
