They took a video cassette that had been damaged. Ran it through something like an electron microscope and scanned the entire tape without unwinding it. Then analyzed it and reproduced what the magnetic media would look like if it were unwound. Then played it. Sort of like the lasers they use to read grooves in old wax cylinders and fragile discs.
