Mac OS X laptops have a system preference setting to disable the touchpad mouse when an external mouse device is connected.

From under the Blue apple icon, select System Preferences. Then open the Keyboard & Mouse icon. Deselect "Ignore trackpad when mouse is present."

New Which is an acceptible software solution...
... but I prefer the hardware kill switch. And Apple REFUSES to do things like that. I guess they don't consider it an "elegant solution."
