Aspects, not categories.
Religion politics, financial, news... these aren't categories. They're all aspects of stories. Each topic can have any combination of these aspects. Which makes the divvying up of the site along these lines a bit clumsy. It's not always clear just where a given story or observation best fits.
I haven't got a concrete proposal, so I'm not putting this in Suggestions. I have a vague idea that some sort of cross-posting mechanism might be good, but no details on just how, or even whether, it would work. I'm just kvetching here. There. Now I've kvetched.

Good idea! Also My-IWETHEY
There can be a customize interface to ZIWETHEY called MY-IWETHEY that the user can use to filter out the stories he/she doesn't want to read by aspects. So if a story has a "Sports" aspect, he/she won't even see it on his/her customize view of ZIWETHEY. Just the Aspects that he/she picks to view will show up. Sort of like [link|http://my.yahoo.com|My Yahoo] or that MSN junk. :)

Keywords!
Have a blank where you can enter a list of keywords for a message. Have a CGI query that filters messages based on keywords. On the front page, a list of canned queries in lieu of fora, and a form where you can construct a custom query.
Within the query response page, have a button to add the query to the user's profile. When the user is logged in, his custom queries appear on the front page along with the canned queries.
A New Message button on the query response page fills in the keywords field of the new message with the query. Editable, of course. But it's a handy default.
How to prevent excessive crossposting? For starters, keep the keywords blank shortish. Also, on the CGI processing, throw out any keywords beyond N count.
Any message with a blank keywords field winds up in the Open Forum.

FWIW, similar proposal at K5
I've been nagging Rusty on a similar idea for Kuro5hin/Scoop. I think that the categorization of stories done by authors is often poor. I'd rather see a story "affinity", which would tend to place it in certain categories.
The K5 categories themselves are also relatively IMVAO poor.

As we have discussed
Finding ways to filter to improve the matchup between user and content is absolutely key to extracting the most value from networks.
What is (deliberately) unavailable is sometimes more important than what is available. See killfiles for prior art. :-)

Make it reader-driven.
Have some kind of voting policy for submissions; reader gets to pick up to *plucks arbitrary number from arse* 4 categories (aspects, whatever) for a submission. Many readers will provide some kind of consensus. Top 4 categories win, and story appears in those categories(aspects, sections, pigeonholes).
Stories could and would appear in multiple thingies, which is IMNVHO a good thing.

Ah yes, very good!
That way a post will appear under the Linux and Unix aspects if those aspects are selected by the users. It will avoid the poster having to make two posts. He/she can make one, and then have the readers vote where to put it. :)
