I understand the enclaves in Europe are quite hard line. Abu Hamza was kicked out of his own mosque by moderates. Terrorist bombings and the Iraq war haven't helped but moderates don't get promptly killed in the UK. Nothing would please me more than to be proven completely wrong and see Islam grow up, but I'm not counting on it. Here in the U.S. Muslim leaders are so concerned with the increasing disrespect their religion is held in they recently met with the Dali Lama to see if he could advise them how to build a peaceful image. They could try being peaceful, of course, but that might be too hard in a religion based on "conversion by the sword". With every story of "Islamic justice" and Sharia law we read or see on TV, respect for Islam as a "major world religion" declines another notch on its way to being though of as just another violent street gang. Islam has certainly been in the spotlight, and a number of people have successfully said publically that the Muslem leaders need to be a lot more visible in reigning in immoderates.
