I hope the judge weighs this with the pro-MS comments:
If the comments were also sent to ATL, the attendee got two entries to win a handheld computer - rather than just one at ATL's conference booth. Compaq iPaq computers, which run Microsoft software, can cost up to $650. ATL executive director Jim Prendergast said he didn't think there was anything wrong with the computer offer.
"A lot of times we'll go to conventions and the iPaq is something we use to encourage people to get involved," Prendergast said. "That's not a bribe." C'mon! If that's not a bribe, I don't know what is! "Side with us, and we'll give you double the chance to win a computer!"

Where does this fall?
It's not quite astroturf. Bribed support-letter writing doesn't qualify as grass roots support either. We'll have to come up with a new moniker--

Need a new term
Maybe oysterturf? Doesn't smell that good and you've got to learn how to eat it without gagging it down.

Nice but doesn't quite capture it.
We need something that suggests the idea of paid mourners, or people paid to applaud on opening night of a bad play. Something like -- Renta-turf?

How 'bout:
"Shilling out"? Sorta like selling out, but with the money more prominently emphasized....
