Nobel 'Economist' speaks
[link|http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/nm/20020128/tc/microsoft_settlement_dc_1.html|Proposed settlement kinda dumb..] Note one of the For Settlement types Arguments in favor of the settlement also drew prominent figures with former attorneys general Griffin Bell and Edwin Meese cited by the Association for Competitive Technology (ACT), a group that includes Microsoft in its membership. Anyone remember Ed Meese of the Reagan Time ? Note how much spin-space they give to ACT in this item.. Also, [link|http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/ap/20020128/tc/microsoft_antitrust_18.html|Dan Kegel open letter to DOJ + cosigners] ATL is a co-sponsor of this week's Conservative Political Action Conference. With access to the addresses of people registered to attend the conservative get-together, ATL sent letters deriding the antitrust suit and urging attendees to send an e-mail to Justice to ``bring to a close one of the remaining legacies of the Clinton administration.'' So then.. is it 'conservative' to automatically support the miscreant - just as long as the miscreant has A Lot to 'conserve' ? Is it that simple, this 'CPA Conference' thingie?

I hope the judge weighs this with the pro-MS comments:
If the comments were also sent to ATL, the attendee got two entries to win a handheld computer - rather than just one at ATL's conference booth. Compaq iPaq computers, which run Microsoft software, can cost up to $650. ATL executive director Jim Prendergast said he didn't think there was anything wrong with the computer offer.
"A lot of times we'll go to conventions and the iPaq is something we use to encourage people to get involved," Prendergast said. "That's not a bribe." C'mon! If that's not a bribe, I don't know what is! "Side with us, and we'll give you double the chance to win a computer!"

Where does this fall?
It's not quite astroturf. Bribed support-letter writing doesn't qualify as grass roots support either. We'll have to come up with a new moniker--

Need a new term
Maybe oysterturf? Doesn't smell that good and you've got to learn how to eat it without gagging it down.

Nice but doesn't quite capture it.
We need something that suggests the idea of paid mourners, or people paid to applaud on opening night of a bad play. Something like -- Renta-turf?

Edwin Meese. Now there's a stellar example of moral strength and terpitude upon whose every word we should hang as if it were Truth direct from Above! (Hang, indeed!)
