Just ordered it
Found a great [link|http://www.tomshardware.com/2002/10/21/inadequate_and_deceptive_product_labeling/|power supply comparison] at Tom's Hardware. The Antec looked really good. There were a couple of cheaper ones, but the availability and documentation weren't as good. Should have it in a couple of days.
===
[edit] It's here. Now to see if I can install it. (/me has no idea if mounting screw locations are at all standardized.)

They should be. Assuming it's not a microATX case, etc.

Good news / bad news
It seems much sturdier than the old one, better fan, it fits, it works. But ...
I think my video card is hosed, too. Symptoms the first time: video stopped playing properly, every time I tried it would hang the system forcing a power-down to fix it. Thinking I had broken something with a recent upgrade, I started playing with X settings, eventually going so far as replacing xserver-xfree86 with xserver-xorg. Nothing helped. I booted to XP (it's a dual-boot) and tried again. Video hung the machine again. That's about when I realized it wasn't my X settings.
Eventually it wouldn't even do a POST. I tried swapping out the video card with the one from the old box and still nothing. Okay, so it's the power supply, I think. Video card goes back into the old box.
New PS comes in, it boots. Yay! Oh, but now my X install is hosed. Okay, boot XP. Comes up good. Hmm, video hangs the box again. Power down quick before I let out any more magic smoke. Swap in the old video card. Boot XP. Video works.
So now it looks like either the video card took down the power supply, or the power supply took down the video card. Time to hit NewEgg again. So for a non-gamer, what should I be looking at?

I've got something like this in my (soon to be) MythTV box.
[link|http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814125032|Gigabyte FX5500]. It seems fine with Ubuntu to me. $40.
FWIW. Luck!
Cheers, Scott.

Wow, have prices dropped
I remember 128MB cards costing hundreds of dollars last time I was looking. If they're that low, I think it's time to order.
===
[edit] Greg, this looks a lot like what I've already got in there. Do you remember off the top of your head what you put in? I can look it up tonight, but if I can order today that's another day sooner I get it fixed.

Most of the nVidia cards are fully supported.
Grab it. $40 says it'll work just fine.

While I'm waiting for that to show up ...
My X install is completely hosed right now. What's the best way to fix that? FWIW I'm pretty close to just burning my entire /home to CDs, and reinstalling with Ubuntu.

I must learn to read everything...
Written: I'm pretty close to just burning my entire /home
Read: I'm pretty close to just burning my entire home
wtf, then reread. So much for speed reading.
Whew, glad your home is still safe.
fwiw, it's been a long week already....
