New Setting up a home network...
...I've got my Linux beast (RH7.2)up with two NICs, one as ETH0 (on DHCP) and one as ETH1 (not configured).

ETH0 accepts the incoming cable modem, ETH1 should be the connection to the home network. I'd like to basically pass anything through that I ask for (I.E. web browsing, ftp to external sites, etc.) but I have no idea where to start or what to read to get that rolling. Can anybody help me out with this? Point me at a FAQ or man page, or something?

Thanks!

New Possible article
[link|http://www.jerrypournelle.com/reports/moshe_bar/bar1.html|http://www.jerrypou...ar/bar1.html] has an article about setting up a home network.

The author (Mosche Bar) didn't make it very clear. I found it to be assuming a lot of stuff, but it might help.

New Re: Setting up a home network...
[link|http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/mini/Home-Network-mini-HOWTO.html|Home Internet gateway mini HOWTO] should help. However, if you've got an old 486 or lower-class of pentium laying around you might want to consider running a[link|http://www.smoothwall.org/gpl/home/|smoothwall] and sticking your linux machine and the rest of your home network behind it (I think broomberg pointed this little gem out a few weeks ago).

I'm of the opinion that firewalls should be firewalls and little else.

New Getting there is the hard part.
I've got an old 233 sitting around I'm going to use for that eventually - but for the moment, it's gotta be this. I'm out of power outlets in the computer room. :P

I'd get some powerstrips, but I'm unemployed, and pinching some SERIOUS pennies. :)

New Gotcha
So that explains the 30lb weight loss eh? ;-)

Anyway, you've probably figured most of this out now.. but first use ifconfig to setup your WAN side nic with the info needed to connect to cable modem and then setup the DHCP server to your LAN side nic. That mini-HOWTO I pointed to covers the details and should get you going :)

New Unemployed and pinching pennies
Look for a Big Lots or Odd Lots near you, or maybe a Value City or some other discount store. They usually sell power strips for under $5 with a little surge protection. For $15 you can get that IBM model with four transformer adapters and four regular adapters. That is what my Windows 2000 Server uses and shares with my Linux server. I bought it before I become unemployed and was out on sick-leave. I got it from Big Lots. I think it retailed for $30 or $45 for that unit.

Linux is supposed to have some built in Firewall capabilities.
