Never in my life
If there was any question in anyone's mind about why I want to get the f**k out of NJ, our fearless leader John, (the jerk) Corzine, should have removed all doubt. His own party refuses to give in to the tax and spend philosophy...saying no to a 1% hike in sales tax (like NJ needs to raise ANOTHER tax...considering I pay 10% of the purchase price of my home EVERY YEAR in taxes, 6% on all purchases, $4 each way to work on the turnpike, $100 to register the car/yr plus $50/pt per year on any tickets I receive)...instead asking him to find that $1B in spend cuts. His response...shut down everything...losing millions per day in state revenue from the lottery , casinos and income taxes on the workers he's put out. In addition, thousands will likely be laid off from the casino's now...making AC even more of a hellhole than it already is. What a d***head. "The people of New Jersey have every right to be angry. Shut yer yap...NJ citizens have been subject to budget impasse before...YOU are the only one that shut the government in response, you petulant child.

The only problem with getting out is . . .
. . you don't get any respect anywhere if you have to say "I'm from New Jersey". It'll take you decades to live that down (but at least they'll be decades not lived in New Jersey).

Well, in Southern California it would be better.
We know about New Jersey here. The only thing we know about West Virginia is that country music stars sing about it (well, a few of us intelekchools know they mine coal there but there aren't many of us who do).

Well, here's what I heard...
What's the difference between Virginia and West Virginia? In Virginia, Moosehead is a beer. In West Virginia it's a misdemeanor.

OTOH
He's refusing to give in to accounting tricks, and allowing the budget to be essentially unfunded. This is NOT irresponsible. If services need to be cut to keep taxes where they are, so be it. Less government is not always bad. The legislature wants to continue to spend, but without raising taxes.
Don't lay it all on Corzine. Not this time. He's not entirely wrong.
The legislature needs to make painful decisions; they refused. Did Corzine shut down the wrong things (lottery, AC) and make this more painful than it had to be? Sure.
But it ain't as simple as you make it out to be.

Sure it is.
His proposal did nothing to control spending. It simply said we can make up the shortfall by raising taxes.
So, his response, come to me with a completely different alternative, top to bottom, in under 30 days. If we hit the deadline, I will not extend. And I won't help you by compromising my position.
He came in with a promise to change things. His own party actually wanted that change. His refusal to compromise brought this to pass.
Of course, the legislature shares the blame...if they would have been anywhere near up to the task, they would have gotten their proposal done and shoved it up JC's patooty.
Governor simply refuses to pass a budget without a sales tax increase. That is his stated position. No matter what comes to him, if no tax increase is in it, he will reject. That comes from a news report I'm listenting to while I type this response.
In the interim, cancellations at the beaches have his 25%..because the government said that tbe "state run" beaches were closed...without stating that only affects AC and one other small location. So in addition to all the revenue he's directly emliminated, he's impacted probably triple that impact along the shore.
All of this I lay at his feet. He was going to be different. No special interest. A great financial mind. Crap. He's in and done nothing to increase the fiscal responsibility of the state...instead simply saying..if you want that much to spend I'll raise taxes... HIS budget..the one that started this...did NOT control spending...it increased taxes. That is my definition of a traditional tax and spend Dem. Business as usual in Trenton.

"if you want that much to spend I'll raise taxes..."
Is NOT irresponsible. In fact, it's the RIGHT thing to say. The conservative thing to say. You remember - fiscal responsibility? Ok, so not in NJ - NJ has NEVER been good with that.
And - the fact that the legislature won't compromise spending, and didn't budget, that makes him wrong for not compromising, and 'funding' excessive sppending and sweetheart deals with bonds, accounting tricks, and hot air, the way EVERY NJ government has done in the last 30 years has done is WRONG?
By all means, lambaste him for shutting down revenue generators - that's just stupid. The budgeting problems, now - THAT'S the legislature doing 'business as usual' in NJ.

Understand the issue
the budget that the legislature rejected was HIS budget. So while not having an alternative is problematic and makes the legislature culpable in this, Corzine's budget did nothing to address the glut of state payroll, which is what HAS to occur to fix the issue. He is (mr no special interest) in bed with the state union. He has been just as bad at placing people in high payroll jobs. His latest trick??? Make a public spectacle of eliminating positions..then a very quiet rehiring of the SAME PEOPLE in different capacities and the same or higher salary.
And in his first "crisis situation"...he's completely blown it.
So while it appears he is saying the "right thing". He's TELLING IT TO HIMSELF!

I'd say this makes them even.
and Christy's gone. By the end of this guy's term, we may be praying for her to come back. Lord knows the last guy made her look good (and butch, too).

Just to highlight
[link|http://www.state.nj.us/treasury/omb/publications/07budget/pdf/revexp.pdf|http://www.state.nj....et/pdf/revexp.pdf]
There is his proposal as far as I can tell. He proposed 2B in cuts, he says...yet state spending is estimated to rise over 4B..and he says this must be done via sales tax.
His brethren aren't much better..they did cut spending a bit more than JC...but want to raise the income tax to cover.
Nobody wants to take on the state workers...who have benefits far exceeding those in any private sector and who in many cases are being earned by people who did nothing to earn them except be related to someone in Trenton.
