Welcome to IWETHEY!

New YEEEEEEHAAAAWWWWW!
Bird's in the air!!

Duncan and I just watched the launch. I've saved it for Aidan to see after his nap.

Helluva bottle rocket for the 4th!
Regards,

-scott anderson

"Welcome to Rivendell, Mr. Anderson..."
New Twas a purty launch
Nothing could be finer on the 4th of July than to see the finest engineers the world has to offer get us back up there, where we need to be.
-YendorMike

New Definitely a nice launch...
and everything seems to be going well.
New The trick is the landing
If there are problems in the insulation (eg falling foam knocking tiles askew), takeoff won't be the problem. Landing will.

Cheers,
Ben

New Both up and down are risky.
Challenger up, Columbia down.
Regards,

"Welcome to Rivendell, Mr. Anderson..."
New Columbia was the one with problems with falling foam
Which was what was showing up here as well.

Cheers,
Ben

New Er, no kidding.
Both going up and coming down are risky.

Columbia exploded coming down. Bad foam.

Challenger exploded going up. Foam isn't the only thing we have to worry about.

Yesterday, the shuttle made it up at least -- half the battle. Yay, can we be happy about that, and worry about the foam when it comes back down? Thanks.
Regards,

-scott anderson

"Welcome to Rivendell, Mr. Anderson..."
New And....falling foam
seems to kill on the way down. They're supposed to check out the shuttle when it docks with the space station. Worse case scenerio, they'll land the shuttle on remote control and get the astronauts down some other way.
New Why do people keep telling me this?
Yes, foam is bad and dangerous, and makes them blow up on the way down. I know this.

They can also blow up on the way up, which the one yesterday did NOT do, for which I'm glad. But Ben said the trick is getting down, to which I'm trying to point out, "No, the trick is not blowing up *either* way".
Regards,

-scott anderson

"Welcome to Rivendell, Mr. Anderson..."
New For a simple reason
Both are risky, but the big safety concern for this flight in particular is worry about getting back, not getting up.

Cheers,
Ben
a very rich person should leave his kids enough to do anything but not enough to do nothing. -- Warren Buffett
New No, really?
I didn't know that! Honestly!

Amazing, the things you learn on the intarweb! It's almost as if a recent shuttle exploded because it got hit by falling foam! That would sure make people sit up and take notice!

Man, what a bummer that would be. We should of course concentrate on the foam and the return flight, then, because shuttles actually making it into space without exploding are a humdrum occurrence, almost not worth watching or commenting on.

And since I had NO idea about the dangers of reentry, given that I was so obviously fixated on the shuttle launch, I'm glad that you've taken the time to educate me about the particularly troublesome aspects of foam impacts during launch, since of course the trick is getting down, after all.
Regards,

-scott anderson

New If you're glad, then I'm glad.

New Absolutely!
I would appreciate you posting more about it, just so that I am properly schooled on the full spectrum of foamish danger. I am obviously quite ignorant where foam and danger are concerned... probably too many peaceful hours spent playing with largely innocuous foam products in the halcyon days of my youth. I've had very rewarding interactions with foam in the form of contraceptives as well, so I'm sure that's coloring my attitude.

So in order that we can have a proper conversation about foam and its attendant dangers, please hold forth!

Regards,

-scott anderson

New Apologies.....I was trying to agree with you.
and did a piss-poor job. :-)

I've always been on edge watching the Shuttles go up...particular at full throttle up. There's some very nice videos of normal rockets (Delta) blowing up spectacularly just as it started to clear the tower. (I know of older ones that did nice loops).

It's up...and safe. And if there were foam damage (I doubt it on this launch) they've got a plan for the astronauts (another good thing). This was a good launch.

(BTW: Foam Bad..... :-)
New Re: Apologies.....I was trying to agree with you.
I usually have tears in my eyes after they make it up.

There's a really good IMAX film of the space station with some teeth-shaking shots of the shuttle going up. Very powerful.
Regards,

-scott anderson

"Welcome to Rivendell, Mr. Anderson..."
New Thanks...but I lived in Merritt Island and Titusville.
IMAX is great...but it can't compare.
New Well, for us poor schlubs in Michigan, it's pretty cool. ;-)
Regards,

-scott anderson

"Welcome to Rivendell, Mr. Anderson..."
New You know what would really suck?
They find some light damage on the tiles and decide it's too risky to try to bring it back in. They remote-control it down and rush the backup to the space station for a pickup. Then they find not-light damage on those tiles.

I really hope the guys running things have thought through that timeline better than the hairspray model who was reading it on TV.

New The trick is the taxiing
If there are problems in the hydraulics (eg leaking hydrazine causing lack of steering), landing won't be the problem. pulling up to the jetway will.
