Tapes may have deteriorated.

I had a bunch of RTR tapes that I record while stationed in Germany in the 70s. Tried to play some of them and the magnetic part of the tape feel off the backing. IIRC tape life expectance is/was only 10 years.

fwiw, this was the "good" 3M tape stock too.
