Welcome to IWETHEY!

New A rather worrisome development.
I've always had hearing loss in the left ear, and mild tinnitis in the right ear. Over the past couple weeks, I've had a few bouts of "stuffy-headedness" where I couldn't hear anything - it was like when you've just gotten on a plane and it's just leveled off at 20k feet, before your ears clear out. At first, I wasn't too worried, but it kept coming back, so I figured I'd better go check it out, especially since I'm leaving for DC on the 20th.

I got an urgent appointment with a doctor, and his basic response was "there's nothing wrong I can see, try and see a specialist." This is worrisome because it means that I don't have an ear infection - more likely is some kind of degeneration of my hearing in general. It might be reversible, if I get on it right away, but it's possible this may be the status quo.

Now I have to negotiate with my health care provider to see a specialist in Washington, DC.

If you've got good thoughts, I could use them.

New Don't worry. It doesn't help. :-)
Maybe you just need to visit [link|http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/2002/12/08/TR199409.DTL|Chinatown]?

Seriously, a decongestant may be worth a try. Go through the [link|http://familydoctor.org/x2582.xml|flowchart]. There may be some pollen, etc., in the air that's flaring up and that you're allergic to and a decongestant may help.

HTH.

Hang in there!

Cheers,
Scott.

New Re: Don't worry. It doesn't help. :-)
The doctor suggested sudafed for me starting tomorrow morning. Gonna try that, but he doubts that's the problem.

Edit: Just went down the list, and it said "see your doctor." :P

New Do you have a headache?
or even mild tension over your ears/near your temples?

The muscles that run from your neck up over the mandibular joint can cause tinnitus and muffled hearing. Push a finger behind your lower joint, just below the hollow under your ear. If that's sore, then what you have could be simple muscle tension.

I have temperomandibular disorder as a part of my fibromyalgia, and it gives me ringing and muffled hearing when those muscles are tight.

New wife had similar, discovered it was an alergic reaction to
to something new in the environment, since you have just moved, and are doing different things you might be affected. Sudafed might help.

New Thinking good thoughts right now.
Also tried sticking my fingers in my ears in an attempt at distance healing by cosympathetelepathic vibrations, but had to take 'em out in order to cross 'em.

New Update
For now, my hearing has returned to normal, for relative values of normal. The specialist couldn't find anything with the tests they ran, but there's a few more to run when I get back home.

New Hey, if your ears are still bothering you
when you have to fly, they make ear plugs that are supposed to equalize the pressure in your ears. I dont know how well they work, but I am going to buy them the next time I fly. A few years back I flew with a terrible sinus infection and blew out an ear drum on the flight. That was some pain. If anything, take some sudafed before you hop on that plane. That's what Dr. Laura recommends.
