New Steelers Quarterback Roethlisberger injured in accident!
Here's an excerpt from the article!
*************************************
Excerpt from the Pittsburgh Post Gazette 6/12/06:

Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger exited surgery at Mercy Hospital tonight after being involved in a morning accident near the Armstrong Tunnels while on his motorcycle. His injuries included missing teeth, broken facial bones and head lacerations.

The article says he wasn't wearing a helmet! And he flew into the car's windshield headfirst! OUCH!

New Bad
The injuries would still be bad. But several of the reports I have seen on this say that the hospital was looking for a plastic surgeon to help in rebuilding his jaw and teeth. Having a helmet on would probably have reduced the amount of damage done to his face if nothing else. It would probably also reduce the degree of concussion he suffered, though I'm just assuming that he must have suffered some degree of concussion.

From what I have seen so far, Ben was actually lucky here. No major muscle or spinal injury, no joints torn, no obvious brain damage.

New Oh this is just too easy
... no obvious brain damage ...
Except for the damage that caused him to ride a motorcycle without a helmet.

No kidding! Or riding one at ALL, in my view! Those things are dangerous! My friend had an accident on one of them and he had on a helmet, but he had all sorts of head injuries anyway because the helmet came off and he had to have facial reconstruction, and it caused trauma to his head which affected his personality and caused mood swings and all sorts of things.

Ben was indeed lucky, and I hope he learns from this and stays off those things!

New Umm, yeah, okay

Then he didn't have a helmet on, did he? I'm not exaggerating when I say that a helmet isn't likely to come off without taking the head with it. If your friend's came off, he wasn't wearing it properly. Which means he wore it because the law said he had to, and went out of his way to comply with the letter but not the spirit of the law. Is that the kind of attitude that would lead to reckless riding? You betchya.

Besides that, you're basing your conclusion -- "Those things are dangerous!" -- on a sample size of one. Well I know someone who died in a car accident. Are you going to stop driving? I didn't think so.

New Reminds me of my daughter when she was young
Hated to wear her bike helmet. Would always put it on the back of her head. One day, just after I had stopped her and had her put it on correctly, she took a spill, went over the handlebars and landed on the helmet. Never had a problem with her wearing it after that.

Same with some of the boys on my little league baseball team. They don't like the batting helmets and try to wear one that is way to large for them.

The police reported that the strap had broken, so they didn't know if it broke when he hit the hood of the car or broke when he hit the pavement. It's possible he was wearing it properly and it was worn out and he was unaware of it, which was what the police report said.

I'm not really basing it on one incident. I know of many many incidents, some where the person died, (friends of mine), some where they were disabled, that had motorcycle accidents. I'm not saying cars aren't dangerous, because any moving vehicle on the road is dangerous. It's just that cars offer a little more protection (airbags, seats and sides and doors to make you less likely to become a human projectile flying through the air, etc. Doesn't mean it can't happen, my own father was flung through the windshield of his old Chevy years and years ago, so it can happen. It's just a little less likely to happen in a car or other vehicle than a motorcycle, unless you're riding in the bed of a pickup truck.

For that matter, even walking is dangerous, but that doesn't mean we should all hole up in our homes and become hermits. ;)
